FBI: Truck driver in New Orleans attack acted alone and was member of ISIS

The FBI announced on Thursday that the driver responsible for plowing a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in New Orleans, resulting in the deaths of 14 people, was a U.S. citizen and Army veteran who acted alone and was a member of the Islamic State terrorist group.

Surveillance footage revealed that the driver, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, planted two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in coolers along Bourbon Street before carrying out the attack. The incident was declared an act of terrorism by Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, describing it as premeditated and evil.

The attack took place around 3:15 a.m. as people were celebrating the new year, leaving 35 individuals injured, some critically. After crashing into the crowd, the driver engaged in a shootout with police before being fatally shot. Two officers also sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition, according to Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department.

The tragic event has shaken the community and raised concerns about the threat of terrorism on American soil. The FBI continues to investigate the incident to uncover any possible accomplices or motives behind the attack.
