First Sea Trial After 2 Years at the Dock!
Join Jason and Nikki Wynn on an exciting new adventure as they take their boat off the dock for its very first sea trial in two years! After an extended hiatus, they dive into the challenges that come with neglecting a vessel. This episode is filled with highs, lows, and valuable lessons learned—the hard way.
As they embark on this maiden voyage, discover why boats don’t like being ignored. From dead thruster batteries to corroded hardware, the couple faces multiple hurdles that make every moment aboard a learning experience. But don’t let the challenges overshadow the beauty of the journey; their laughter and camaraderie shine through as they tackle each task head-on.
Whether it’s cleaning algae off the deck or maneuvering through impossibly tight slips, every trial teaches them something new about their 50′ aluminum explorer yacht. Get ready to experience their process, as Jason and Nikki embrace curiosity and exploration into the unknown waters.

You "let him have a go at the helm"? Damn you are rough. We can tell who wears the pants in that relationship.
The bedroom is an unusual place to locate batteries … !!!
I am getting so excited for your next adventure.
Oh Man, great Stewie cut it. I had to play it 3 times, then laughed my butt off😂
Fenders, the training-wheels of canal travel.
Less of the negative self-talk guys! You are extremely experienced drivers, you will NOT hit anything you are not meant to and the boat will go exactly where you want it to. Simples!
I can't believe how light and open and airy the new home is, it looks so stunning!
Now, whatever you do with your new Kárcher pressure washer, DO NOT use the pointy nozzle adapter which spins the water jet at like a gazillion rpm. It lifts concrete off my driveway, will cut through flesh and bring old'ish paint off with one pass and it raises the grain on woodwork to the extent that it begins to strip it away. Also, do NOT use it on ANY canvas items that you value, I can send you piccies of my neighbour's Audi TT canvas hood if you want to see the results.
So, if you use it on the cork decking it will most likely destroy it in seconds. The straight jet you were using is perfectly OK on almost anything.
Can't wait for you to get to sea proper. But little steps are the right way to go. Brian
I’m very excited for you two but also thrilled to be riding along with you.
Those batteries can be jump charged , several times before dead.
Ya, the Wynns Win!
In the future to clean, stainless metal parts and bronze metal parts useCLR cleaner you just have to put it in hot water with CLR and let it sit and take them out
Yay, off the dock, moving under your own power! Good to see. Not an expert, but I've heard experts say, "Slow is pro." I'm sure you'll take your time, and soon you will feel as comfortable with this boat as you did with Curiosity I. Safe first trip, I"m looking forward to the interview with the guy who installed the systems.
17:40 — RE: "Paying attention to where my rudder was…"; A: There's another way to keep it straight no matter what type of control system you're using. "Pick a Turning Circle", as in, going to Starboard or to Port. Whether in forward or reverse, you're traveling on that circle. Tillers are at their trickiest but also most useful when also dealing with sails. o7
You guys should get yourselves a battery load tester they only cost 120-150 dollars and will test your batteries, and tell you what percentage of life they have left, far better than just replacing batteries that may have plenty of life left. A multimeter is great to determine that they are dead, but the load tester will tell you the health of the battery and warn you that you should replace them before they are completely shot. Especially a good idea if they are running electronics or computer components which can be damaged by improper voltage.
Great episode. The boat seemed to work as advertised! We are looking forward to the next video.
Make sure the AGM batteries receive a constant 14.5 volt charge from the system, or you’ll be replacing the new AGM’s in the short term. Because AGM batteries require a higher charge rate than standard lead/acid batteries.
And lady, stop trying to always wear the pants in your marriage. That semi narc relationship issue is getting more and more dissimulation to watch.
You can place those type of batteries upside down and they won't leak they are a gel filled battery
Love you two, be careful. I am still here in the Dallas area watching.
Ah WV. Good stuff.
Im so glad your back to sailing.
You most likely answered this for us already, but what is the fuel capacity of your boat?
I Have A OPTIMA Brand Battery In My Pickup Truck, Yes Not Quite The Same Thing 🫡
But It Lasted 14 Years 🤓 Before I Needed To Replace It, With Another OPTIMA. 😮
Wait… so the hand tiller works opposite of a tender tiller. Tiller right IS boat right not left? I never used one but I totally assumed it worked the same as a small boat 🤯
This video was so much fun…smiling right along with you.
Not gone through all the comments but…did the guest pilot wear an HH jacket??? That'd be…odd.
So happy you both are finally back on a boat and getting to live your dream again. 🙂
Better when it's not your boat. I have you know I enjoyed fixing my battery issue on my tube tire inflatable! 🤣
Very exciting step for you both. Gotta admit, watching that clumsy beer pour hurt my eyes 😅
how do you like that vessel ratchet that you used to service the batteries? I got one on order and wondering if its worth it.
Get scrub brushes for a drill……..nobody hand scrubs boats anymore….just saying.
So darn exciting!!
Electrician here, batteries probably totally sulphated, liquid could be from cracked casings leaking electrolyte, heavy corrosion in the vicinity is dead give away of serious off gassing or leakage
.the reason lithium is not recommend for dc thrusters is fail safe capability, and the stupid high current, a bms cutt off whilst docking in heavy wind is possible, lead acids won't do that if they are in reasonable condition.
Please provide dramatic drone shots of your travels to that location near Amsterdam.
HNY! I am so happy to see you two on the move. Your new home is beautiful.
All ahead slow. Congrats on taking your first move off your slip 🇨🇦
I've got a big grin going for you guys. Looking forward to the adventures!
dielectric silicon is your friend. You put a thin film on all the electrical connections. Normal thing when working on any electrical in "humid" or "wet" installs.. Those batteries ae not conventional nor do they charge like conventional.. my guess you found out by now but those are "Optima" batteries… if run down, almost always done for….You could use the "Red" top optima…..
Turn the micro tiller around, then it will be like a tender with a tiller
Nice edit.
There is no reason not to use Li batteries for your bow thrusters. I do it myself. However, you have to match the discharge rate and discharge surge capacity of the Li batteries BMS with the requirements of the bow thrusters. On my Jeanneau 54DS the initial discharge exceeds 640 amps @ 24V and is sustained at over 400 amps. It takes robust Li BMS's to handle this. Most Li batteries have a BMS that can only handle about 100 amps so you will have to research this carefully. Victron, Mastervolt and Epoch starter rated batteries, if you use enough of them can handle it. And, I am sure there are others. And finally, you will have to have your charging system configured for Li as well.
Coca Cola neutralizes battery acid instantly. I keep a bottle handy when working around batteries, in case i get it in my eyes or anywhere, Coke bath!! Had a freind get some in his eyes, he yelled for me and I poured coke all over him, and no problem!!
