“Focus on Being Your Best Self, Not Someone Else’s | Zhihui Ma – YOUTH | TEDxNew Channel Qingdao” – Video

In the thought-provoking TEDx talk “Don’t Try to be the Best Someone, be the Better You,” Zhihui Ma invites us to shift our focus from comparison to self-improvement. Emphasizing that true growth stems from within, Ma encourages listeners to embrace their unique qualities rather than striving to outshine others. By sharing personal anecdotes and insights, he illustrates the detrimental effects of competition on mental well-being and creativity. Instead of chasing external validation, he advocates for the pursuit of personal goals and passions, urging youth to harness their individual strengths. Ma’s compelling message underscores the importance of self-acceptance and continuous improvement, empowering individuals to craft their own paths to success. This engaging talk is a reminder that the journey toward becoming a better version of oneself is far more fulfilling than the relentless race to be the best in someone else’s eyes. Join Ma in redefining success and nurturing a growth mindset for a brighter future.

Author Video Description

In her talk, Ma Zhihui shared her journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance as a “low-energy” person. Often mistaken for indifference, her quiet nature once led her to strive to become more energetic. Yet fighting against herself only brought frustration—until an unexpected speaking experience showed her that honesty could earn applause warmer than perfection.
She realized that the real obstacle was never being “low-energy” itself, but refusing to embrace her authentic self. When we stop fighting who we are and transform inner struggles into outward strength, our quiet uniqueness can shine in its own way.
Ma Zhihui is an 18-year-old high school senior with a passion for music and life sciences. Although she trained in choir from childhood, she once doubted her singing ability before realizing that singing is not about perfection but authentic self-expression. Today, it has become her favorite way to connect with herself and others.
Deeply interested in marine biology and neuroscience, she gained early research experience in a neuroscience laboratory, where studying fluorescent proteins strengthened her fascination with the complexity of life. She hopes to pursue biological sciences while promoting science communication and ecological conservation.
Though not a natural public speaker, Ma has discovered that speaking is another way of building genuine human connection. Through her TEDx talk, she hopes to encourage others to embrace authentic expression and meaningful dialogue. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
