Food for thought – The hidden realities of farming (2/2) | DW Documentary
Where does our food come from, and where does it end up? This two-part series looks at the journey from production to plate, exploring the hidden world behind the food we eat.
*[PART 1: https://youtu.be/IIU1KM74MxA]*
In “Food for Thought,” photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen embarks on an investigative journey into the food we eat each day. His research takes him to the US, China, the Netherlands, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—exposing the problems and contradictions of globalized food production.
“Food for Thought” delves into global challenges of food sustainability in different parts of the world. In the US, where climate change is wreaking havoc, high-tech farming is being touted as a potential savior. China, on the cutting edge of agricultural research, balances traditional farming with AI-driven innovation in order to feed its vast population. Kenya, sometimes called Europe’s vegetable garden, has to balance ethics and economics with its massive export industry. Meanwhile, in the arid landscapes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, ambitious efforts towards food self-sufficiency reveal the paradoxes of farming in the desert.
“Food for Thought” is a wake-up call for global agriculture, asking the question: How can we secure the future of our food supply without further endangering our planet?

Slavery extended using economic hegemony. Soon it’s going to fade way and Western countries should start doing some real work.
Value addition should be the word for us Africans
If we are to survive as a species, we will need to stop eating animal flesh and animal products such as milk and cheese. The infrastructure surrounding animal agriculture – cooling, packaging, transportation, waste and pollution- is unsustainable. The damage inflicted on the earth's resources is obvious. Billions of animals having to be fed and watered every day; it's unsustainable. The future is vegan obviously. Thank you DW.
Agricultural produce makes the biggest percentage of Kenyan export. We don't do much of manufacturing, and we import a lot of other things. I hate it that Europeans are not happy that we're doing business with them than begging them.
I see these people are not happy that their food comes from Africa. Am proud of my country Kenya
I'm not often Jealous but right now I realize money can actually buy you everything. I've been thinking last couple of months to import one of our Dutch cows here to a farm in rural Thailand and start a new breed on my farm next year. I was wondering if I could import one and make it survive here in Thailand but apparently it's possible if they can do it in the desert of Dubai, I can do it here also 🙌
YOU NEVER MENTIONED THAT MOST WORKERS IN KENYAN PLANTATIONS ARE PAID LOWLY, DEPLETE WATER, AND WASTE POLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT. WOMEN ARE SEXUALLY EXPLOITED FOR EMPLOYMENT OR RETAIN POSITIONS.
I WISH YOU COULD ALSO SHOW WHERE THE WORKERS LIVE.
Pray before you eat
5:50 So we can’t even trim the ends of the beans ourselves anymore, that’s how far we’ve fallen. Next thing you know, someone will be tying our shoelaces and wiping our asses for us. Decadent Europeans
Some one has to feed these democarcies
They are offering pretty good example of genuine entrepreneurs…
The future generations depends on Africa for it's food security ..
We Africans needs to open our eyes
Feel bad for them but gotta hit my protein
Great, congrats dear farmers. Try to use Brazilian technology, Brazil #"1 food producer. I respect farmers so much.
Olivecake, the by-product of Olive Oil production is a beneficial animal feed.
28:52 the progress of what? Self-destruction?
Europe finished now it will be in Africa, honest truth at the end
I once heard a speech by the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs who said, “The Europeans assume that they know the Middle East, and they know Islam, and they know the others far better than we do. And I’m sorry, but that’s pure ignorance.”
This reminds me of the ending of the film Dune, where other Great Houses also assume they have gained control over Arrakis and prepare to launch a full-scale attack on the South. But they fail miserably because of their misconstrued beliefs about the region.
I’m not from the UAE, but I often ask myself how these people have managed to build such a kingdom on land that other developed nations don’t want or dare to live on—setting aside their darker sides. If they can truly achieve what documentaries show—using 95% less water for agriculture and reducing pollution globally—they could be a model for other countries to follow.
Yaaani…tunauzanga maembe imekatwakatwa?? Yooooh
Why were those veggies not being eaten there? According to the info we got, those are the top rank nutritious ones. Or they have plenty of others and better ones, or culinary is rooted into history and culture?
Most Asian countries are trying to make more varieties of veggies in more creative ways so there are more choices for consumption
It seems to be people watching this are not realizing how unsustainable, especially the animal -husbandry, all this is.
Seyredemedim..
Vahşet neye deniliyordu? Bunca gerilim filmi seyrederek vahşileştirilmeye çalışılan insan, insan olmayı unuttu..
It's a good documentary. Thanks. I'm growing some vegs and fruits as much as I can in a small space to get sprays free. Trying to buy more local and organic food but if government provides funding to the local small farmers who are using organic farming or regenerative farming, that would be really good.
This is so sad so exploitation for Kenyan they poor they have to work for Europe to earn a living
They want their fodd prepup precut and ready to eat that made them lazy that is exploiting the poor
To think that we could feed millions with the food we waist just because it does not look good, is just insane!
This is a Dutch show originalie
Great doco
Unfortunately the people of Africa repeatedly failed to create a wise leader and I wouldn't separately blame the leaders because these leaders are the product of the people of Africa, if the majority of the people are smart there would be a good chance a great leader would come out from such people.
Potential doesn't matter, ask the Dutch people how they reclaimed land from the ocean and became top agricultural exporter of the world. It's not about potential, if you have a smart brain you can even create a potential out of nowhere like the Dutch.
I hate the way the Western world wastes food. So sad and pitiful. Food you don't feel like eating you throw away. That's a taboo.
But you're not feeding Kenyans, well I make a salary that pays my workers salaries. Good clap back. 😂
