Forced sterilization in Europe | DW Documentary
In 12 EU countries, women with disabilities can still be sterilized without their consent. Sara Rocha, who has autism, is fighting to ban the practice in Portugal and networking with affected people across Europe to raise awareness of the issue.
Forced sterilization is a practice that should really be consigned to the past in Europe. After all, in their ratification of the Istanbul Convention, most EU nations committed themselves to protecting women from violence. Nevertheless, it is still legal in 12 of the bloc’s nations to sterilize disabled women without their consent. This is a huge scandal, says Sara Rocha: “No one has the right to decide whether someone can be a good mother.” The autistic activist is campaigning for a ban in Portugal, while networking with those affected across Europe. As a pregnant woman with multiple disabilities, she sees the issue as a personal one.
One of the women who talks to Sara is Natacha Ooteghem from Belgium, sterilized against her will at the age of 24. Her mother did not trust her to raise her own children. Only now is Natacha able to find the words to express her pain and anger about what happened to her. Like many others, for a long time she was told that the procedure was for her own good. Today, she is breaking her silence – together with other victims.
Sunny Stemmler lives in Berlin with her three-year-old son, Matteo, in special accommodation for parents with disabilities. The 34-year-old, who has learning difficulties, has long fought against prejudice and opposition to the idea of her having children of her own. Today, her example shows that parenting with a disability is possible – if it is allowed and properly supported.

Our current policy is eugenics except backwards.
This really says a lot about countries in the EU.
Any parent that does that to their child should be imprisoned for the rest of their lives, and the doctors that the performed the procedure as well.
Parents do not have dominion over a child's body.
Mind you, Iceland encourages its citizens to abort children that look or have the possibility of being disabled.
If you think Europe values human life, you are totally wrong.
yt removed my comment comparing this practice to what a certain european nation did in the 1930s to 40s but leaves others advocating for the sterilization of autistic people, calling them wastes of society
I have a child and he has severe autism.
🍀
my mother is partially disabled. She couldn't go to a normal job, my father earned little. We were broke. And my mother played poor victim because of her disability. She just had kids so she has someone to take care of her. I had to grow up fast. I hate it. People who are not healthy enough to grantee a normal life for a child shouldn't have kids.
NO children in this climate change chaos of extreme weather and extreme heat and no future…. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✌️😎✌️🔥🔥🌎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
In not surprised, afterall the concept of eugenics started in Europe.
This is a horrible practice.
There are non permanent ways to avoid having children.
Well, forced sterilization still happens in the united states too. Especially in california
And when Natasha 20:26 has her baby girl and she gets completely overwhelmed because there are no supports in place for her, who will take care of that child and who will pay to support it? She can't even hold down a job for heavens sake
The statement "Every woman can and should be a mother" is absolutely ridiculous! This is the reason why there are so many children that are neglected and abused
This is appalling. Scientifically ignorant. The return of eugenics is horrific. Knowledge has moved on though the world is slow to catch up and people speaking about this don't know what they're speaking about.
We should not accept and welcome an increase of vulnerable adults with disabilities..
it all depends on the severity of the disability like Sara she has a partner employment family and friends she has a community. Unlike Natasha she has legal guarding. It is clearly to me no one is paying no mind to the unborn child
Who the f… shall finance everybodies wish? There are some cases they can't even take care of a dog or cat probably. Without proper help. Living with their parents or in special housings with help. There are cases they are making love in bathrooms with another handicaped people in facilities where they can work. Who should take care of the children? Nice side fact. They facilities have jobs which sometimes make 200€ for 8 people in one week. These jobs are supported with tax payers money. And often could be done much faster with machines, one average person much faster or abroad. But nobody is talking about.
Don't play humanitarian be where ever you are good human being.
I think psychiatric disorders like narcissism and psychopathy should be taken into consideration as well. It would make the world a much better place…
The amount of uneducated and cruel people commenting here is shocking. Shame on you all.
Only if the child's health is not at risk which is very possible today.
19:01 she can adopt a baby.
Just adopt don't destroy someone life
12:50 those things doesn’t help they spoke for people who have government help. Taxes 😮Humm
I understand the problem they are trying to solve but it is an extremely difficult question.
Because if it is hereditary I would say the rights of the children comes before the wishes of the person who wants to be the mother.
But it should also be the men
