Forgotten temples in the Himalayas | DW Documentary
High in the Himalayas lies the former Kingdom of Mustang. This remote region is home to centuries‑old monasteries and temples — the bedrock of a unique Tibetan culture on Nepalese soil.
But the harsh climate has taken a heavy toll on these sacred sites and the unique culture they sustain. Only the restoration of the monasteries in recent years has sparked a cultural renaissance.
Italian master conservator Luigi Fieni and his friend Tsewang Bista, nephew of Mustang’s last king, embark on a four‑week journey across the former kingdom in northern Nepal. They are united by a common mission—to preserve Mustang’s culture for future generations.
Time, however, is running out. Without large‑scale revival, these ancient monasteries will continue to crumble. And a resurgence of Buddhism would not please everyone in the neighborhood — above all, neighboring China. It has other priorities and seeks to prevent Mustang from serving as a refuge for Tibetan exiles.

We were there 7 years ago, and the memory still feels alive. Luigi is doing an amazing job, and Mustang is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The warmth of the people, the magic of Lo Manthang—everything was unforgettable. Mustang will stay in our hearts forever.
Context is everything! Just like the Art Conservator is saying.. when you take these beautiful pieces of ancient artwork and artifacts out of the monasteries from where they have been housed for hundreds of years… everything that has meaning will be lost. The Buddhist monks who have dedicated their lives and careers to ensure their survival need financial support and wider public awareness in order to stay ahead of destruction.

No mention why China is paranoid, it used to be the base of Khampa revolt against the Chinese. CIA funded and trained these people, they routinely attacked Chinese military conveys. Documents found after one of the attacks revealed the falling out of Soviet-Sino relation. Finally, Nepal had enough and they put an end to the revolt. CIA abandoned these rebels after normalising relation with China.
