Paris authorities have implemented a new low speed limit on the city’s busy ring road, known as the Boulevard Périphérique, with the goal of improving safety and overall quality of life. The speed limit on the 35-kilometre stretch of road has been reduced from 70 km/h to 50 km/h, a move that has sparked debate and criticism from drivers and opponents.
Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a member of the Socialist party, has championed the initiative as a necessary step towards reducing accidents and improving the environment in the French capital. However, critics, particularly those on the right, have labeled the measure as “socially unfair” and have voiced their opposition to the change.
The Boulevard Périphérique has long been a symbol of Parisian traffic congestion and pollution, with thousands of vehicles passing through the road on a daily basis. The decision to lower the speed limit is seen as a proactive step towards addressing these issues and promoting a safer and more sustainable urban environment.
As the new speed limit rollout begins, it remains to be seen how Parisians will adapt to the changes and whether the anticipated benefits will be realized. The debate surrounding the Boulevard Périphérique and its speed limit serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by cities in balancing the needs of motorists, pedestrians, and the environment.

20 km is about 12.3 miles per hour… not 30.
Só much evolution in last century and now just go take the horses again😂😂😂
Shameful in 21st centure in times of AI, in 10 years all in Europe can ride on horses .. Europe is going BACK IN TIME …
Paris is a traffic disaster because of the deplorables-roads, traffic engineers, drivers and no police to administer traffic. Paris is unserious about quality of life.
Such logic, 70 to 50 is safer. Like it’s safer to walk and not run, dah!
It sure appears as if the mayor wants to lower the speed limit to initially get more money from speeding fines and then after more drivers comply then have much heavier and slower moving traffic with more traffic jams which she hopes will force or encourage people to use other forms of transportation especially train/metro. No consideration that cars running for a longer period of time because they are driving slower or stopped in traffic will pollute more not to mention lost productivity and longer commute times .
Isn’t this a connecting road prevents Europe from having United States style stroads? If so, this idea is ignorant AF.
At the end, the city needs money, with the increase of penalties and fines it will obtain new funds.
As an Australian who’ve driven parts of the Paris ring road on my recent Europe road trip, lowering speed limits will only make things worse in terms of traffic jams! I am strongly opposed to any speed limit reduction on any road, anywhere in the world!
The policies of left wing Governments around Europe, from reducing speed limits, to mandatory speed limiters, to low emission zones to bike lanes are just making life harder for drivers!
I don’t believe in the climate change narrative as a justification to lowering speed limits! I also think putting good drivers first should be a central part of European transport plans!
