These people are ridiculous. They say this breaks their heart, but they keep voting for republicans.
Wealthiest country in the world but very unevenly distributed.
WV has been poor ever since democrats sent ALL their industries out of country. It wasn’t just coal there was A LOT of manufacturing. I’ve been going there to ride 4 wheelers for DECADES. This is nothing new. It’s been ghost town after ghost town forever. Got really bad during Clinton
80% of the county voted for Trump. FAFO
Did Bari Weiss approve this segment? Walter Cronkite is turning in his grave.
all the comments here about 'who you vote for then?' (the obvious implication being the orange clown and they somehow deserve poverty)… many of these people were so desperate for a slither of hope and he conned them, they are not bad people, they just wanted a chance. These people are like all of us, maybe they are just feeling the pain a little sooner than the rest of us, we may all be here soon enough.
I do feel for these people, but they're wrong, people move for work, housing, surrivial, the attitude of why do we have to move is why they're being left behind….It's not the job of the government, corporations, or anyone else to present you with opportunity, you have to get outside and find it yourself….
Obama killed them. Hillary even told them to learn to code, when the mining was shuttered.
So, again its disingenuous and inaccurate to blame this entirely on the current administration.
Honestly, its no different than what they've done in inner city section 8. Food stamps, crime, no jobs, and rampant addiction.
Use your eyes, not your ears.
I find that our local council are 💯 trying even harder to help us adjust to this new 🆕💈💈💈 lifestyle 🙏🦷
They find out 🆕💈💈💈🆕 New information ℹ️ℹ️ and try to help us 🙏🦷
490 $ for electric bill is crazy. I live in a small developed European country and my parents pay 200 € for a house electric bill that also includes charging 2 EV cars that make 4.000 kilometres a month.
i've been telling ya'll for a long time. our goverment dont care about its own people. the politicans do what they want and the citizens suffer a heavy price, but when its time for voting, those same politicans come around and smile in ur face turn then poop on your doorstep. an illegal can cross the boarder and get more from federal tax payers than a natural born citizen gets. america will collapse.
maga voters
If the jobs have left your town, you need to move.
If the water is not fit to drink, you need to move and also report it to the EPA.
If you are living in an area that has coal mining contamination in the ground/water, you need to check the EPA's website and see if you are living on or near a Superfund Site.
Ghost towns are all over the United States. Just because businesses have left and things have changed or advanced, that doesn't mean the government whether local, state, or federal doesn't care about you. It means the jobs, and most of the people have moved on. Staying behind is a lost cause.
Staying in a bad area is not practicing common sense, nor is it wise.
I'm curious….I wonder who they voted for? Now, my question is "do you trust this current administration?" Eight years ago, Trump said he would bring back "good clean coal"… Does that even sound right? Even after that big lie to get their votes, they voted for him AGAIN! Life should have taught you NOT to trust a liar…..
A vote for racism is a vote for poverty. I mean have any of them changed who they are voting for? God isn't going to do anything for you, if you haven't figured that out. They can't afford to move; remember poverty?
I just ate 4 Tacos now my breath smells of onioins.
Wonder how 400 million dollars would help communities like this.
Trump's cuts hit the poor hard but they will still put the same old people in office doesn't make any sense they can't see the trees for the forest America wake up for God sake
Amish communities needed.
help is on the way…Ty God.
Vote conservative even if it kills you.
You can't vote for a president without voting for the Congress to support him or her. Obama had only two years and Biden none.
Build data centers there. That’ll bring in jobs and cheap labor.
Trump doesn't care!
The stock market?😂
HEY! No Electric Bill? Too good to be true? Hear! Hear! YouTube! LIBERTY ENGINE 2.0 – 5.0. (This technology will beat Tesla!)
They voted Trump. Don't care how much they suffer.
Supposedly , 80 million people didn't even vote.
Thoughts and prayers..
We'll know if they have seen the light if their votes in Nov reflect it.
But, coal is comming back!!! Mean time, coal companies are investing in natural gas power plants. 🤣
What would happen if the four thousand churches in West Virginia came and worked hand in hand with the locals and helped out this community for a week? Repairing houses, planting gardens, insulating homes, installing water filtration systems, Installing rainwater collection systems, bringing enough school supplies to last a year, teaching small business education?
You know they'd vote for him for a third or a lifetime if possible. It's unfrigging believable.
Why, when the world is moving with lightning speed toward renewable energy, are you people clinging to an industry that kills almost everyone in it? Where do they think the pollution is coming from?
The greatest trick the Republican Party ever pulled (and they’ve been doing it successfully for almost 60 years) was to get poor, rural, and blue collar people to vote against their own best interests. That county voted more almost 75% for Trump in 2024 and the percentage was even higher in 2016. They are so desperate for a savior that they will make a deal with the devil. They are experiencing the end game of “sowing the wind, and reaping the whirlwind.”
Well, rich and the politicians, billionaires and the millionaires, say everything’s fine…….
First the wealthy took their resources then the mines left the land polluted. Then the pharmaceutical companies poisoned an entire generation. I think it’s time to realize that we need money out of politics. Shame on Trump for starving children to transfer the wealth to the top 1%. I will never forgive Trump and Musk taking from the vulnerable and spending tax dollars on ballrooms and war.
As an observer & politically unaffiliated, West Virginia’s coal heritage deserves respect, but relying on one industry is no longer enough to keep young people from leaving. Too many residents which includes young people move away because they cannot find the jobs and opportunities they need to build a future. If the state wants to reduce emigration and keep the next generation at home, it must invest in new industries, education, infrastructure, and modern careers. Change is difficult, but creating more opportunities is the only way to give people a reason to stay and help the state thrive in the long term. For starters, elect politicians who actually care and are willing to invest in new industries, education, infrastructure, and good-paying jobs.
I'm literally staying in an Airbnb that's not even 200 yd from where Tabitha works. I can personally vouch for everything that they're saying. I literally said to my friends, look at all these abandoned places! But In reality they're not abandoned, people still live in these homes that are literally falling apart. It's really quite sad over here. People are literally doing whatever it takes to make it work. They are so grateful for any kind of contribution. I sure feel for these people.
$200-300 a week for groceries, for 2 people? There's a Super Walmart 40 min. away. And if there are no jobs in McDowell county then you move. Americans have always traveled to find work.
It sounds like these people feel entitled to be supported.
The mines aren't coming back. Coal was the only reason these towns exist. Time to move on.
Btw, my partner comes from a coal mining family in Jolo, left to work in the auto plants in Detroit, and after marriage and a series of jobs ended up getting a law degree from Harvard.
