Global National: June 27, 2025 | Canada’s Digital Services Tax Pushes Trump to Axe Trade Talks
In a surprising turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump has abruptly halted trade talks with Canada, citing the nation’s impending digital services tax as the flashpoint for his decision. Set to impose the tax on major American tech companies starting Monday, Canada’s move has sparked Trump’s ire, prompting him to threaten new tariffs as a retaliatory measure. This decision starkly contrasts his earlier commitments made to Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit, where he had pledged to work towards alleviating a range of existing tariffs by mid-July. According to political analyst David Akin, this escalating tension could have significant ramifications for the Canadian economy and its trade relationships.
The announcement comes at a precarious time for Canada, as economic indicators reveal signs of contraction. Data from Statistics Canada shows that the country’s GDP shrank by a tenth of a percentage point in April, primarily due to downturns in the manufacturing and export sectors. Anne Gaviola notes that the risk of a recession looms large as these economic challenges converge with weakened trade negotiations. Analysts are now left to wonder how this development will further impact Canada’s economic landscape.
In a related development on the American side, the U.S. Supreme Court dealt a significant blow to judicial oversight, ruling that individual judges lack the authority to issue nationwide injunctions, a practice that has hindered Trump’s policy agenda. This decision could have profound implications for various initiatives, including contentious topics like birthright citizenship. Jackson Proskow explores the repercussions of this ruling and its potential to reshape Trump’s policy ambitions amid ongoing conflicts.
As Trump continues to implement a stringent immigration policy, health care providers express increasing concerns about the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. With hundreds gathered in Halifax for an annual conference, the backdrop of Trump’s aggressive deportation tactics and ICE raids adds a layer of urgency and complexity to discussions. Correspondent Heidi Petracek reports on the heightened anxieties among healthcare professionals, who are navigating the intersecting issues of immigration, health care, and humanitarian aid.
As Canada braces for the fallout from Trump’s abrupt maneuver, the tension between the two nations intensifies, raising critical questions about the future of trade, economic stability, and international relations in an increasingly volatile landscape.

The report on the Toronto Raptors GM firing is the lowest energy sports story i have ever seen
Never trust Trump. He doesn’t seek deals, he seeks fealty, and enough is never enough.
Trade wars are when leaders have their own citizens beaten and whipped hoping the other countries will give in. It is just that stupid.
He started it, Canada will finish it! FDJT!!!
Horrible. Where are all the countries that should be helping out the citizens of Gaza? No excuses.😢
If hes in a bad mood he will take out on anyone
Why don't we just join the european union
Carney will roll over
my bitcoin says no
Gaza officials. When will global and other Canadian media learn that sadists don't share our values of truth and life. Pathetic
Oops didn’t think that one through Mark!
Trump must be pissed about Canada and Greenland deal, the Australian radar deal before that, the recent German EV battery deal, the Asian oil and gas deal. Lots for him to be pissed about.
But hey, its okay to tariff the crap out of Canadian imports. How dare Canada retaliate!
Canadian here, we do not have a 400% or 200% tariff on American dairy, lol. What we have are reciprocal tariff rate quotas on protected industries. These quotas have never been met and therefore none of these tariffs have ever been paid.
These tariff rate quotas on protected industries are part of the NAFTA-2 agreement that Donald signed in 2017 and called "one of the greatest deals ever."
If they want to operate in Canada, then they open themselves up to owing taxes in Canada. I'm sure Trump would expect Canadian companies operating in the US to pay US taxes, right?
Trump's brain is salsa at this point. How can anyone take the US seriously with this erratic 🤡 in the Oval Office? The US will be left behind by everyone else.
Mark Carney is a treasonous traitor to Canada.
Who cares that trump broke off trade talks, that's just his bully tactics to try and get the other side to capitulate. Who cares!! – Elbows up!
Like he was going to negotiate? There is no negotiate with this convicted criminal as he would just set his terms and then change them shortly after. Canada would just have to bow down to his terms and then just gobble up his weekly changes. For anyone not believing this ask yourselves if he is currently abiding by the existing free trade agreements.
Distraction, distraction, distraction. I hope everyone is aware that SCOTUS just passed a ruling that all but ensures Trump's dictatorship.
I think America just gave Canada the Elbow……..
I don't think any of us ought to be too worried about what Trump says or does, short of a threat to invade. If we do as he asks, we might strike a deal which he will then break. If we don't do as he asks, he might threaten huge tariffs, which he will then walk back. If we do nothing at all, he might increase or decrease tariffs for no reason at all. As Mr. Carney said, we can't affect what Trump does. That's why our PM is seeking more stable trading partners.
It’s pride month!! It’s
A celebration of Canadian diversity 🎉
GET THIS GUY OUT OF OFFICE, TRUMP I MEAN
So how’s that elbows up crap going? 😂
See you guys in 2 weeks, when he's changed his mind for the 93rd time
As a Canadian, I never thought I would ever consider leaving, but these last 10 years have got me thinking, I should. Why is every Western country destroying itself?
The US is finished. What an awful place. I feel sorry for. Non Maga folks.
If your talking about a president taco decision it will change again when he changes his diaper, has dinner, watches TV or catches up on his medications.
Carney and the liberals will back down again.
Carney is being trained by Trump. Don't come to negotiations with anything that you do not really have as leverage. This is Trump's way of saying "Go home and try again."
Looks circus Carnie got a late lesson in life how things work in the real world. Lol
They always made them believe they would get food after the shower 🚿?
Trump lost again 😂
I GUESS MR
TRUMP YOU ARE HAVING A BAD DAY. MAYBE NEXT WEEK. IT OK.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Lol trump is in debt to billionaires like Bezos, and of course they don't want their services taxed ever, that would mean contributing to the world in which they live.
You conservatives have no ideas what your talking about; the very fact that Carney is implementing retaliatory tariffs is proof that he is indeed continuing to fight for Canada, especially when these digital monopolies are exploiting our country (operating in Canada and making billions while our country does not profit); I dont understand you guys sometimes, its not our country's fault we have to deal with a power hungry psychopath who wants to annex us. Plus this is BORDERLINE global policy; countries globally were talking about these taxes in conference while Trump was in office during his first term; Canada and the EU are finally implementing these taxes to ensure these companies arent expoliting entire nations, and paying their fair share in the foreign countries they operate in.
I am a trained investor. I am confident in the Canadian economy recovering in the next few years. I am not so cofident in the recovery of the US. In fact, Canada's economy, though being hurt by this trade war (we all knew this would happen and yet have kept our elbows up) is in a very strong position considering all of the trade opportunities we now have. I am proud to be Canadian.
