In the ongoing battle over Trump’s tax cuts, Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has emerged as a key player. Roy is pushing for significant reductions in federal government spending in return for extending Trump’s multi-trillion dollar tax cuts and introducing new tax breaks, such as exempting tips and social security benefits from taxes for seniors.
In a recent interview with WSJ’s Richard Rubin, Roy outlined his stance on the issue and the potential compromises he is willing to make. One of his key priorities is to prioritize spending cuts in order to offset the cost of the proposed tax reductions. This includes examining the fate of programs like Medicaid, which could face reductions in funding as part of the overall budget realignment.
Roy’s approach to the tax cuts reflects a broader shift within the GOP, with a new generation of Republicans like himself taking a more fiscally conservative stance on government spending. This approach is likely to influence the ongoing debate over Trump’s tax plan and the future direction of the party’s economic policies.
One of the key tools in this debate is budget reconciliation, which allows Congress to pass certain budget-related legislation with a simple majority vote. Roy’s stance on spending cuts will be crucial in determining the success of Trump’s tax plan through this process.
Despite his firm stance on spending cuts, Roy also emphasized the importance of working with President Trump to achieve their shared goals. The interview with WSJ highlights the complex dynamics at play within the GOP as lawmakers navigate the push for tax cuts and the need for responsible fiscal policy.
As the debate over Trump’s tax cuts continues to unfold, the role of lawmakers like Chip Roy will be instrumental in shaping the final outcome. Roy’s insistence on spending cuts as a precondition for tax reductions underscores the broader ideological shifts within the GOP and sets the stage for a potentially contentious legislative battle in the coming months.

The first reasonable GOP voice I have heard in a long time!
Chip Roy💯🇺🇸💪🏻
He dont krep promised
Our debt is to high
Tax cuts😆well they raise taxes on working class people with tariffs
Eliminate ALL income security. Eliminate all WELFARE.
He may be trying but tRump, GOP, and DOGE are mostly smoke and mirrors.
Thank you, Chip Roy. Fiscal sanity is what we voted for.
Just look how excited the market is! A couple of minutes open and the Nasdaq has lost 4% already! The fiscal genius of republicans is astounding! So impressive that the economy will crash.
Tax cuts have never paid for themselves.
We need to tax wealth, not just income.
Raise the social security limit
i think it is the wrong approach but at least he is consistent, keeps his word and does not change his opinion bc the president says so
Where is the income? Income for governments come from taxes! Who are you going to tax? It better be the billionaire class.
2:37 spending restraint on the defence budget also right!?
How about cutting the trillions spent on the military giving money to countries like Israel
Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 was the last budget that got us out of the red. It taxed the rich and lowered entitlements in a bipartisan manner. This is what got George Bush Sr out of office even with a high approval rating and Clinton continues to take the credit.
Oh look, a tax cut that benefits him and his family rhe most while a tax hike, oops i kean tariifs for the rest of us….
Trump will definitely try to primary Chip Roy and Thomas Massie—maybe even Senator Rand Paul, given how outspoken he is about tariffs.
All these "silly" programs in the govt that are being cut need to be examined publicly. You can't just cut programs and brag about your "savings."
Binance infinity ETH bug right now
I just made a video to show that=
Congress should all stop getting a salary. He is getting a free lunch.
What sacrifice are you going to make?
Simply put…
The purpose of tariffs is to drive prices up to extort money from the Working Class. Workers are already stretched, thin due to income disparity and over taxation.
It only takes one country to initiate a tariff, and the effects are felt globally. Trump has decided to tariff EVERYTHING consumed.
The only group of people who ALWAYS benefit from tariffs is the billionaire class. To add insult to injury, but do not want to pay their fair share of taxes to help run the country. That says a lot.
What examples of waste? Specifics, please.
I'm glad someone is criticizing the GOP mythology that all tax cuts increase revenue. That's not even what the Laffer Curve/Supply Side Theory suggests. It's not what Kemp/Reagan advocated. They advocate that SOME tax cuts can be revenue positive. Tax cuts increase the revenue PER RATE POINT, but most will not increase it enough to pay for the rate reduction. It depends where you are on the curve, and where you're going. And the measurement is difficult because the alternative history of how much the economy would have grown without the cut is impossible to nail down.
The GOP should go back to being old school deficit hawks. Yes, we need to spend more on some things, but when doing so, government needs to prioritize. Take the money from somewhere else. Want an F-47 program? Cut somewhere else to pay for it. Only cut taxes AFTER spending. Drop the debt-ceiling fights, economists who studied it showed it hasn't actually resulted in lower spending because the CRs actually make it even easier to sneak pork through. The one exception was the Obama era sequester which placed caps on certain spending. The rest of these standoffs have been net losers.
If you're going to reform taxes, REFORM them, don't just lower them. Lower rates with fewer loopholes. The tax base should be broad, but with rates as low as possible both to not discourage economic activity, but also to make it not worth the risk/cost to evade the taxes. And you should be able to sell this to anti-rich Democrats by pointing out their own claims that under the current loophole ridden system, nobody pays the nominal rate anyway.
The modern GOP is an intellectual train wreck. It was headed that way before Trump, but it's accelerated under him because he says preposterous things and then Fox and Newsmax feel like they have to make that their official line.
Man, Donald Trump really genuinely think that he is a genius. MY GOODNESS 😂
Need to close tax loopholes and hold corporations to their tax liabilities and have them show their patriotism like the citizens.
Congress already committed to cutting taxes by at least $2.5 trillion more than whatever they save with cuts.
Cutting taxes in general to reduce the deficit is stupid. Guaranteeing a deficit no matter how much you cut and claiming you'll reduce the deficit is insane.
Anyone claiming they care about the deficit while proposing tax cuts is lying. If anyone believes we have a 'spending problem' you have to do the reform first to the places where the money is going: Medicare, military, social security. Then pass the tax cut if the reform actually works.
Chip Roy cares about corporate welfare rather than Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, because our taxes guarantee his income and medical insurance for life. Tax cuts for the rich/corporations guarantee big campaign donations.
Defunding the IRS is not going to help in reducing the deficit. CBO estimated more than $500B in taxes will go unpaid this year.
He did great in his first term! All the teriffs are complete nonsense! It is hurting everyone and will hurt those he intended to help!
• Induatries will not all flock to the US to make their products!
• The auto industry is on a delicate balance of supply chains that's built up over many decades and cannot be easily replaced nor changed!
• The US is not and cannot build the same cars from Rolls Royce, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini!!!
• Perhaps a few US manufacturers will on shore their production but most foreign manufacturers, especially those I listed above, will not be shifting their production to the US!
You could cut taxes all day and night if you actually held people top to bottom liable for all their taxes. Loopholes and misclassication of assets accounts for an ungodly amount of money. But it’s also going to upset the donors who are the primary beneficiaries. 🤷♂️
There should be NO tax cuts. If anything spending needs to be reduced and taxes need to be raised. and ALL the money gained and savings applied to reducing the national debt down by half over the next ten years.
This troglodyte has one objective and that is to privatize everything and that equals higher costs for far worse service
Bull *#$t. If this were about the deficit we would not be cutting taxes and firing people at the IRS.
why they take tax when they can print money anytime?
Got in an uber with a driver who illegally immigrated. He's receiving medicaid and government stipend monthly. Bragged about not having to pay for any medical procedure. That's wasteful and unfair spending.
9:20 I love that they can be so direct about there interest. “He’s here to win”, remember people this is a politician, I’m sure he was elected so he could “win”😂😂😂😂. Good luck to us with these turncoats!
Cut military waste and spending is the only way to cut the deficit and raise taxes! Only way!
I dont agree with him on most things but at least he is consistent. A lot of the GOP suddenly forgets all thier fiscal responsibility talk when it's a Republican giving away tax revenues. Sure, cutting spending is important but no one balances thier budget by asking thier boss to give them fewer hours.
Medicaid needs great oversight to prevent abuse.
Circular magical, thinking spinning in circles
It's not a spending problem, it's a GOP refusal to tax problem.
