Canada’s Gordie Howe Bridge Toll Agreement: Clarity Amidst Financial Obligations
In a recent announcement, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that the collection of tolls from the soon-to-open Gordie Howe International Bridge will not be shared with the United States until all associated debts are fully repaid. This pivotal decision underscores Canada’s commitment to recoup the $6.4 billion it invested in the construction of the bridge, which links Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan.
Set to open on July 27, the Gordie Howe Bridge has experienced several months of delays, raising concerns and anticipation alike among commuters and stakeholders. As outlined in the original agreement, Canada was slated to retain all toll revenues, a critical component in covering the development costs. However, recent negotiations have led to a new agreement, altering the financial landscape for toll revenue distribution.
Carney clarified the terms of this agreement during an interview with Global News, stating, “It’s not splitting the tolls of the bridge. It is an agreement for 15 years to split net revenues.” This means that while Canada retains overall control of the tolls, the net revenue—after operational costs are deducted—will be shared. Such operational costs include expenses related to the management of toll booths, snow removal, and ongoing maintenance of the bridge.
The Prime Minister emphasized that any sharing of tolls will be contingent upon the complete repayment of the construction debt, ensuring that Canada meets its financial obligations before entering into revenue-sharing arrangements. This approach seeks to safeguard the integrity of the funding structure while also assuring that the bridge’s operational efficiency is maintained.
As the opening date approaches, the implications of this toll structure will be closely monitored by both Canadian and American authorities, as well as the countless daily commuters eager to utilize the new crossing.

Well that doesn’t go with what the conservative talking heads are saying.
Has Carney ever told the truth about anything?
I like it, they delayed the economic benefit for the us until trump is out of office. It's a win win for both sides. They also are using his tactics of passing legislation while the other side is distracted by bombing Iran. Mark is up here playing 4D chess, Americans wont care as much if the competing headline is: Trump bombs important Iran civil infrastructure.
CLOSE THE CANADIAN SIDE OF THE AMBASSADOR BRIDGE UNTIL THE ORIGINAL DEAL IS HONOURED.
Yet another demonstration of the intellectual difference between an orange-flavoured toddler and a world-class financial genius.
Here, I'll quote Winston Churchill when he said, "Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions."
Trump and his minions don't even yet realise they've been played….Canadian-style.
Cheers from Canada North

ok well my question is what other revenues does the bridge generate other than tolls lol he as usual is full of sh it and do the negative revenues get split or shared or is canada footing the bill as the way carneys negotians usually end up
Good. Luck. $6.5 BILLION to be paid back via toll fees…..that will happen in 6.5 BILLION years…Oh Canada…and will there be boarder control and checks?
So Trump get money from Canadian paid bridge?
He can say whatever you want to hear. How will we ever know the truth?
Make Gordie Howe Bridge toll Affordable. Travel is down has a lot to do with the high cost of travelling the bridge.
Onto the next crisis. All you have to do is let tRump think he's won at something and you get what you want every time. 😊
Then I guess the bridge will remain closed!
Make it a one way street into the US. 😂
Canadians paid for it because Canada needs it.
America doesn't.
Sit on it Trump !.
Is it even possible for Carney to destroy the country even more? 🤦🏻
Trump is the dumbest deal maker in the history of the world! He couldnt negotiate himself out of a wet paper bag
Love how Carney plays Trump!!
There would be no issue with the bridge if the liberals had not rejected the free trade agreement with Donald Trump after agreeing to it. The bridge is leverage this is payback.
You’re bargaining with a hockey player and banker. He’s already seen your next five moves. Take a bench son. 😂
Will someone please pass this on to our Banker/Prime Minister:
REVENUE is the total amount of money a business generates from the sale of its goods or services before any expenses are deducted. Often referred to as the "top line," it indicates sales volume.
PROFIT is the financial gain that remains after all expenses, taxes, and operating costs have been subtracted from revenue.Breaking Down Profit Types
GROSS PROFIT: Revenue minus the direct cost of producing the goods or services (COGS).Operating Profit: Gross profit minus ongoing operational expenses (rent, payroll, utilities), before interest and taxes.
NET PROFIT (Net Income): The "bottom line." This is the actual amount of money a company keeps after deducting all expenses, including taxes and interest
You always say it's good for Canada America doesn't need you to step down and hide somewhere
So much misinformation out there trying to cast Canada as the loser in this deal. News Flash: it's not profit sharing it's revenue sharing and only after debt is repaid!!
Who ordered the word salad ???
Hey Carney, how you going to stop the U.S. from keeping whatever money they collect in toles. They have been picking Canada's pockets for years with the Liberals in charge.
what if… Carney has and MoU with Trump and has traded in his elbow pads for the knee pads.. given that over 90% of Carney's investment portfolio is in US
Right on, Mr. Prime Minister sir.
This is a master negotiator?
We should had not agreed to anything else than the initial deal. Send them people trough the bridge. Let them deal with the nightmare of people crossing the border without customs.
Best pm!
Trump lives off the rest of America, he can fund his own way of life instead of sponging off Canada.
It will be interesting to see if the Don Gordie bridge actually opens this month
Conservatives keep ragging on Carney because so many news outlets in Canada are owned by Trump loyal American conglomerates–with a clear agenda: To make Carney look bad because he is standing up to Trump. In the same breath, they will tell you that you can't believe anything coming out of the CBC because it's a federal funded corporation, that they believe is loyal to Carney. I've seen plenty of negative stuff on liberal politicians on CBC shows. For me they are the most unbiased reputable news media in Canada, and only report thoroughly fact checked news stories with no slant. They do not squash stories either just because the Prime Minister's feelings may get hurt, and if the PM ever pulled funding from the CBC in retaliation to them making him/her look bad, he/she would get investigated for abuse of power.
I think the madhatter could give a more cohesive explanation. The other thing is that the Trump admin never seems to be reading off the same page as the other side whether it's trade or diplomacy or war. You think it's a deal, then it's not.
I wonder if Carney still thinks Trump's (laughable) MOU with Iran is still a 'game changer'. It didn't seem like much of anything to me, and I don't even have a high forehead like Carney does.
6.4 Billion at 5.25% interest fixed rate + the cost of maintaining the bridge + the cost of operating the bridge it is expected in the original contract to take 19.8 Years before the bridge will turn a profit Trump will be long gone before the profits ever get shared
I think the debt repayment will take longer than the 15 year duration of the profit share agreement, but he can't publicly say that he hoodwinked the Trumpalumpas
This is what obfuscation sounds like ladies and gentlemen of the jury.
Yes! Canada gets paid back through tolls until all of our investment money’s for building the Gordy Howe Bridge.
Good job sir!
If Carney can cut down a bit on his jetting and in-flight meal bills Canada may have a head start on the first couple of years
Who are the individuals who profited from the building of the bridge?
Carney is being deliberately vague here. He's deflecting and being very imprecise with his terminology. On top of that, he refuses to disclose the actual agreement. I think he got fleeced.
What a joke.
More TDS losers😂 Cope harder. Cry about Trump more😂
Trump is awesome😂
Carney would sell u out in a heartbeat so he can have a scapegoat. He does it every day
There are so many lies in these statements it's hard to keep track of them
It seemed a little confusing when he stated that once a profit is realized, the sharing of revenue will begin. Surely, at $10 per car, it will take a long time to recoup 6.4 billion, especially when added costs like maintenance, snow removal, etc is factored in. I'd like to see this in writing to be sure I've got the deal clearly in view.
He didn’t answer the question! Is servicing the debt taken off before net revenue is calculated?
