In a shocking turn of events, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been confirmed killed by Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza. The news was confirmed by Israel, who released video footage showing Sinwar’s body in the house where he was killed.
Sinwar had been leading the armed group in Gaza since 2017 and was believed to be the mastermind behind the deadly 7 October attacks, in which Hamas gunmen killed over 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated, “Today, as we promised to do, we settled the score with him.”
The Israeli military reported that Sinwar was one of three militants killed during a raid on a building in Rafah suspected of being used by senior Hamas members. The operation was said to have been triggered by a chance sighting of Sinwar by a military patrol in Rafah, along with three other suspects.
A drone was then used to track Sinwar in the building, resulting in his death. Confirmation of his demise was delayed as Israel compared dental records and fingerprints to positively identify him.
