Highlights of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago: Global National, Aug. 19, 2024

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) has commenced in Chicago, with the party rallying behind U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for the White House, as U.S. President Joe Biden prepares to pass on the torch. Democrats seem re-energized at the event, despite looming protests against the war in Gaza. Meanwhile, both Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National Railway are facing potential work stoppages that could have a significant impact on the economy, as negotiations for a new labour agreement have stalled.

In Ukraine, the military has gained momentum in its war against Russia, capturing more Russian territory in two weeks than Russia has in Ukraine all year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has high hopes for his country’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. A report from the Criminal Intelligence Service Canada shows a rise in organized crime involvement in auto theft across the country, with increased violence associated with carjackings and auto theft.

Additionally, the Nova Scotia Firefighters School has been shut down over safety concerns, five years after Skyler Blackie was killed by a faulty fire extinguisher. Blackie’s family is advocating for an overhaul of firefighter training in Nova Scotia. For more updates on the DNC and other news, visit the Global News website.
