Summary of Hijack (1973)
Hijack, a gripping British TV thriller from 1973, is a masterclass in tension and suspense, crafted with a meticulous eye for detail and an unrelenting pace. Directed by the talented John Frankenheimer, the film showcases the formidable talents of its leads, Howard Keel and Eileen Atkins.
In a departure from his well-known musical roles, Howard Keel stars as a hardened trucker caught in a harrowing ordeal. When his truck is hijacked by a group of criminals during a long-haul drive, he finds himself thrust into a deadly standoff. Keel’s portrayal of the no-nonsense protagonist adds depth to the narrative, as he must navigate both the physical and psychological threats posed by his captors.
Eileen Atkins complements Keel’s performance as a fellow hostage whose predicament intertwines with his own. The dynamic between the two characters amplifies the film’s tension, as they are forced to strategize and endure under extreme circumstances.
Set against a backdrop of gritty 1970s realism, Hijack plays out like a pressure cooker on wheels, seamlessly blending elements of crime thriller and psychological drama. The confined setting of the truck creates a palpable sense of urgency, with stakes escalating mile by mile.
The film’s lean narrative, punctuated by moments of intense suspense, keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, making it a must-watch for fans of confined dramas and thrillers.

Real shame David janssen died in 1980 as a 49-year-old human being. That is an absolute shame and it was totally predictable and preventable.
People know him claim that he smoked up to two packs a day and drank like a fish. Hey people, you can't do that kind of thing when you're in your 30s and your 40s. It's just not going to happen.
Just look at The sopranos guy the guy who was named James gandolfini. 51 years old and well over 300 lbs. His family says he never took cholesterol medications, I never took blood thinning medications, and never knew what his sugar levels were or his cholesterol levels were. Did not have a clue, or an interest.
Looks like David Jansen on the cover 😂
Looks like the fugitive actor 😂
I'm watching this good film on my phone right now in this month of June 2025. Why don't they have other movies of this caliber on YouTube to watch on my phone too, like the 1972 film Deliverance?
81/0. It really bugs me when a character in a film has an ailment – you just KNOW he's going to become a total pain in the arse (and he did). David Janssen is on top form as usual but the storyline had lots of holes: when trouble started and he was being chased, ambushed and shot at, why didn't he just ring the man who'd hired him and ask him to send help? Then when that silly old bint (Sheriff) was telling him her life story when he was desperate to use the phone to call for help, why didn't he just barge past her? Oh well ….
