Hiroshima – A story of survival, loss and forgiveness after the atomic bomb | DW Documentary
A family is torn apart when the first atomic bomb is dropped in Japan in 1945. A teenaged boy is separated from his father in Hiroshima. Now, decades later, the boy’s daughter tells the tragic family story.
On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., the first atomic bomb explosion in a war killed more than 70,000 Japanese civilians in Hiroshima in one fell swoop. Countless others, seriously injured, fought for their lives.
The massive detonation wave completely destroyed 80 percent of Hiroshima’s city center. Just 1,200 meters away, Shinji Mikamo and his father Fukuichi miraculously survived the catastrophe. Shinji was rescued from the danger zone by his father, who was also wounded and suffering from severe injuries and burns. It was a long, painful journey. When they parted ways, the teenager Shinji had to survive on his own.
The documentary shows the true story of Shinji’s journey of survival and forgiveness. It combines rare footage with poignant re-enactments to create a haunting first-hand account of the horrors of nuclear war. It was produced by Shinji’s daughter Akiko. She sends a message of peace to the world, so that “no one has to suffer from nuclear war again”.

Until Japan owns up to its own actions as a colonialist monstrosity in Korea and China, never mind the sheer brutality to their own indigenous people, this kind of journalistic hand wringing rings hollow.
The father never gave up for his son.. The son never gave up for his daughter.. Parents are the greatest.
I have no words. Thank you for this documentary. Je n'ai pas de mots. Merci pour ce documentaire.
May his legacy prevail over all the hatred, prejudice and dominance-hunger that led to this war.
RIP Shinji Mikamo (1926-2020)
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Civilians shouldn't reap the consequences for the actions of their military.
Someone please explain to me the fathers death. He described it as if he died in the blast. Was he hallucinating his father the entire time? Wtf am i missing? I am SO confused. I kept waiting to hear what happened and all he said was his father died in the explosion…. what???
Why did Hiroshima face the horror of the atomic bomb? Unless Japan engages in genuine reflection and remorse, it cannot move forward from its past
Japan invaded and subjugated much of Asia — especially Korea — conscripting people and turning them into tools of war. By refusing to acknowledge this past, Japan remains imprisoned by its own history. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial tells a tale of tragedy, but conveniently omits why the bomb fell in the first place
A reminder:
Hiroshima was where the 2nd Army headquarter was located which command the defence of southern Japan and was a hub for communication.
Also Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was located there and buildings warshipd in their shipyards.
nice documentary but maybe need more " raw footage " to increase realistic + get the message.
The resilience and courage of the survivors in this documentary are truly humbling. It's a powerful and necessary story about a dark moment in history, told with immense grace and dignity.

The Japanese military killed 3 to 9 million people in the second world war. In the Japanese massacre of Nanjing, nearly 200,000 people were murdered, beheaded, bayonetted. All evidence points to a Japanese military and people committed to inflicting as many deaths and injuries to American troops as long as possible. To this day, compared to Germany, Japan is not very admitting of its many war crimes and not appropriately interested in teaching that history to its people because of the shame it involves. All war is savage and inhumane, but this annual rite of "woe are we" is tiresome in view of what the Japanese did, were willing to continue doing, and will not fully acknowledge their guilt in. In his broadcast to the Japanese people announcing surrender, Hirohito specifically called out the terrible weapon of nuclear bombs, which would result in the destruction of Japan. There were even survivors of those two cities that said it was the right thing to do because it saved lives in the long run. Retrospective moral revisionism is always a suspect thing, especially when it is the perpetrators who seek the revising.
Cruelty of Human kind. We need to learn how to embrace peace and not to promote hate and war to prevent this in the future.
Never a story of American crimes and criminals. Always soft language of “loss”
I am Japanese. There is so much I want to say,but I can’t put it into words to be honest. All I can say is that we must prevent this tragic event from happening again and I want to be kind to others even if it’s just in a small way.
This is a phenomenal reenactment
Tokyo was bombed that same year without using nuclear and caused massive damage as well. There was no justification for this atrocity.
I missed how Shinji's father died!? I have rewound it back to the part where his dad and he were first split up (when Shinji went to the hospital) several times thru to the finding of his father's pocket pocket-watch scene. I missed it
While many Japanese people suffered immensely due to the atomic bombings, some view it as karmic retribution for the brutal acts committed by the Imperial Japanese Army in other Asian countries during World War II. Still, this view is morally complex, as many of the victims were civilians with no part in those atrocities
So Incredible, I cried throughout watching this remarkable story of a Father's love and intense determination that inculcated will power beyond what is normal to his son. ❤
We learn every day and I just learnt something new in my 50 years of living on this Earth…when you lose something, don't be angry but happy because you gain something new and more valuable…
This is wisdom that cuts across race, culture, nationality, religion. It is about being human. We have lost all that today but it's never too late to reclaim our being human.
THANK YOU FOR THIS LIFE-CHANGING VIDEO.
You're playing victim's costume like this? 😢😢

Is trasadi ke baad sari duniya ko afsos huaa par jisne bomb giraya…jo apradhi tha use kabhi glani na hui…
They forgave because they had to. They LOST the war. Their rampage from 1931 to 1945 ended in SURRENDER.
But did they really forgive? No. Nonstop emphasis on the A-bombs created a victimhood mentality.
Accommodating victimhood mentality by the US was the origin of white guilt.
White guilt was Japan-centric. It was not felt when it came to China and Southeast Asia.
Holy Moses.
I’ve never cried until I watched this video.
Bravo DW. Bravo.
Beautiful culture . Great documentary.❤
😂😂
And there are now world leaders who talk of nuclear bombs as if they are regular weapons. The horror of how nuclear weapons can destroy should NEVER be witnessed again….on ANY scale.
This made me cry
Kaheva Universe YouTube teacher of Confucius as a philosopher not a theologian
One step closer
Humanity is not to be forgiven !
It’s firebomb not atomic bomb and Germany too no need to be kidnapped by Israel morally….japan never apologize to Asia and the Gaza ongoing slaughtering. So the real history are being made to learn…focus on the real ongoing events
