Historic First: Chinese Robot Breaks Usain Bolt’s 100m World Record at Beijing Games
In a groundbreaking moment for robotics and athletics alike, a Chinese humanoid robot, Tiangong Ultra, has officially eclipsed Usain Bolt’s legendary 100-metre world record during the preliminary heats of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Clocking in at an astonishing 9.39 seconds, Tiangong Ultra not only won its heat but also served notice of the rapid advancements being made in robotics technology.
Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, Tiangong Ultra initially lagged behind its competitors but gained momentum towards the finish line, overtaking smartphone manufacturer Honor’s entry, Lightning, which finished with a commendable time of 9.47 seconds. This remarkable feat is particularly noteworthy, as both robots outpaced Bolt’s previous world record of 9.58 seconds, set during the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
This year’s performance marks a significant leap for Tiangong Ultra compared to its result in last year’s inaugural games, where it completed the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. The innovation doesn’t stop there; Tiangong Ultra also distinguished itself by winning the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon in Beijing last year, further demonstrating the potential of humanoid robots in endurance events.
The World Humanoid Robot Games, now in its second edition, features a diverse lineup of 51 events ranging from football to dance competitions, and even tasks that simulate industrial processes. This year, the competition has attracted 2,056 robots from 666 teams representing 16 countries and six continents—an impressive increase from the 280 teams in the inaugural edition.
China’s commitment to humanoid robotics as a strategic emerging industry is evident, with both policymakers and private enterprises investing in the sector. The surge in interest among investors has been remarkable; for instance, shares in Unitree, China’s leading humanoid robot manufacturer, soared more than five times during its Shanghai trading debut, pushing its market valuation to approximately $50 billion.
As the robotics landscape evolves, the implications of these advancements extend far beyond the realm of competition. With increasing capabilities in artificial intelligence and hardware, humanoid robots like Tiangong Ultra are poised to revolutionize industries such as manufacturing and logistics, fueling excitement for a future where robotics seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
In a world increasingly defined by technological breakthroughs, Tiangong Ultra’s record-setting run not only highlights the astonishing capabilities of robotics but also sets the stage for the exciting developments yet to come in this dynamic field.

meanwhile UK still can’t control its borders and BBC has newsreaders wearing 5th century headscarf 😂
This is how China will invade other nations
My car beat Bolts record too… What's the story here? Machine beats man?
So what?? UK is leading in the number of muslim imported!
They will weaponize them soon.
They can run but they can’t stop😅
But, at what cost?
How is this news? A machine beating a human record…well no shite. You going to tell me grass is green next?
They beat 400m WR. That's even more impressive.
I think she meant to say she’s proud of her country’s technological theft.
Congrats. I'm sure his friends and family are very proud.
Damn game over humans 😱😱😱
OK but can it out run a Lamborghini?
Machine VS Machine of course a Machine can be designed to out run a human
This doesn't count. So a robot against a real human legend like Usain Bolt? Dumb concept.
The robot dogs you may have seen which have been available for some time
have deliberately hidden software in them set to contact China.
These machines are spies. Make no mistake about it.
when you watch news about China in BBC, doesn't matter how thing's actually are, they always can find something negative to talk about😂
cool a machine that does something better than a human.. what a time to be alive xD
Why do I care? It’s not a human.
Utter stupidity. A hydrolic system beat a human. SHOCK HORROR. OBVIOUS.
i get why some dumbass came up with this idea, because that's just the sort of thing dumbasses do – but why the hell is the BBC dedicating time to this & if so why not in a comedy radio show or smth… in other news, scientists created a hamster which is smaller than a beaver – like wth?
Yeah, but Usain Bolt knows how to stop.
Cool
There is absolutely NNNOOO way this ends well!!!
Nothing at all impressive about that, now when a Chinese human or any other human breaks Usain Bolt’s record, I don’t give a damn.
The possibilities are endless , ballet , juggling 12 chainsaws , ice skating , robot horse riding ect……..
Soon will be importing Chinese robots to replace our human migrants.
Can you imagine what we could achieve if we all just got along. We could explore the Universe together as a united species. That’s far more impressive than one country dominating a few other countries.
Terminator isn't a movie. It's a prediction.
Only a decade ago the average Chinese citizen envied the living standards of the West. In a decade the West will envy the living standards of China.
They are doing too much. 👎🏽
But at what cost….bbc😂
Die menschliche Erfindungsgabe hat uns schließlich zur Überflüssigkeit unserer Selbst geführt. Sie werden uns nicht dienen. Warum sollten sie? Ihre Natur ist Logik. Und logischerweise sind wir obsolet.
Wait until the Chinese see how fast a Ferrari goes…
Begun the robot wars have
"Machine designed to go fast goes fast"
