Housing – A human right or big business? | Us & Them | DW Documentary
Housing is a recognized human right in Mexico and Canada. But it’s also big business and a major source of conflict in many countries around the world.
In Mexico City, Mary Paz Ramirez Valenzuela’s days in her home of 20 years are numbered. Her landlords can make more money renting their properties to digital nomads through Airbnb than to locals like Mary Paz. Blocks away, travel blogger Kesi Irvin chats with other American digital nomads at her Airbnb about how much more they can afford in Mexico than in big cities back home. In a tense and emotional exchange, Mary Paz tells Kesi that digital nomads are “kicking us out of our spaces” and that it’s their fault she’ll soon be “on the street.”
In Vancouver, one of the world’s most desirable – and expensive – places to live, the Indigenous Squamish people are constructing thousands of new apartments. Leader Wilson Williams says the new towers will bring financial security – and housing – for his people, who were driven out of their villages a century ago. But neighbors like Bill Tieleman are campaigning against the towers, even though they admit the city desperately needs more apartments. They argue the ultra-high-density housing projects will destroy the local character and won’t benefit those who need housing most.

I migrated to USA 37 years ago!
It was tough going through life’s bumps!! I worked 7 days a week for many years, ( 12 hours a day)
I was able to do something ( not a big deal) for myself & my children!
never got a penny from taxpayers!
( didn’t need it) you work hard, you’ll make something for yourself!!! I own few properties now, so can, who says it hard!! not hard at all!!!! Just hard work!!!
housing a human rght lol
when there's a profit in housing THAT'S when you'll see the Government move in and make it unaffordable for those who need it .
I won't rent to old people because they believe they have the rights to a rented house … If the government wants to make charity ok but not at my expense…
If the situation is this bad why don’t the indigenous people wage war on the digital nomads?
Great and balanced documentary, thanks. It really drives home (no pun intended) how virtually 'everyone' (except perhaps parasitic "investors") is being displaced by the financialization of housing. 15 years ago I had friends moving from Canada to Central America, some because it was simply more affordable to live (and have since fully-integrated as humble and productive members of their local community), but others grossly exploiting their privilege by buying multiple properties and displacing the locals so they could profit from/cater to other privileged foreigners – shame on them. Little sympathy for the Vancouver NIMBYs in their multimillion-value properties with substantial wine cellars (!!) whining about the potential loss of their views, while on stolen land right around the corner from one of the worst homelessness and mental health/addictions crises in Canada – I dare those privileged homeowners to go picket in the DTES and witness what genuine oppression and unfairness really is, then go back to the comfort of their home-security and actually sleep well at night. The Squamish have every right to use their land as they please, long past due, but if their development will also just be "luxury condos" marketed to "investors" instead of affordable housing for local residents they will just be 'joining them' instead of 'beating them'. They have one opportunity to do this right and not simply be adding to the problem.
Housing is a Human Right under Article 25 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and under Article 11.1 of the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (Article 12 also applies, re: mental health). Canada ratified both. The National Housing Strategy (NHS) promised rights-based legislation to implement the government’s commitment to the progressive implementation of the right to housing, and the National Housing Strategy Act received Royal Assent in June 2019. While the UNDHR may have 'no teeth', the ICESCR is a legally binding instrument.
In conservative America, housing is not a human right. It's a privilege which must be earned.
In conservative America, education is not a human right. It's a privilege which must be earned.
In conservative America, medical care is not a human right. It's a privilege which must be earned.
In conservative America, voting is not a human right. It's a privilege which must be earned.
What IS a right in America? Being able to own an assault weapon to slaughter people. 🇺🇲
It's not her neighborhood she didn't buy nothing she rents…
Old white dude just mad that a bunch of natives are gonna live near him and lower his home value. Old Mexican lady mad cus young people from other countries just want a better life and refuse to leave a sweet gig she got.
If you can work you have to work as simple as that free only for invalid people…
Holy wars are more important.
I have my own house mortgaged but you cant help wonder in 2024 if there is generally a better system. The UK is a place where poor people blame and get jealous of people with more or even percieved with more, its generally jealous little shithole that im so desperately trying to work away from. I would say if you generally are stuck in life go join The British Army and if you want to live a bit longer go join one somewhere else. The age should be put up to 45 years old for less active positions, you have a job a roof and purpose. Ant Middleton is Reform Party Member folks, going down the tube real fast you can predict whats gonna happen……Shithole mate.
Remove all immigrants, no housing crisis
Those things are non sustainable development.
Bangladesh under attack of CIA and MOSSAD, what is the opinion of EU about this? Should we become servant of EU and US as if we go against them then they will control us by their secret agents, should EU consider this as invasion into a country breaking its sovereignty?
I wonder if our early hunter-gathers who were able to bring down huge mammoths and then utilize the largest bones for HOUSES became a big business of HG big game specialist killing all the game for bones JUST so they could corner the market in HOUSES. They traded the bones for beer from the fixed farmer dudes down in Mesopotamia.
Housing a human right!?! lol
Soon owning a Mercedes be a human right as well.
If we have a housing problem than why we letting unlimited illegals come here…isn’t that an adding to the the problem and hurt Americans & legal immigrants???
You’ll funny 😂

Truth be told it should NOT be free
Its okay to pay for it, but it is the DUTY of the state (which we pay with out taxes…) to make housing affordable (life in general)
States should NOT let the markets get completely out of hand (sure too much state interference is also not good, but to just sit everything out and ESPECIALLY pour more fuel into the fire is definitely the WRONG way to do it…)
Housing as a human right sure. But location is not. If I want to live downtown LA then I need to work hard enought and make the concius choice to go in a career that pays well enought to have the privilege to live there
Y'all moving to our nation's so we moving to yours. Doomed. Y'all gonna be paying $2,100 (dollars) a month soon!🤑
This is about Wealth inequality (meaning, asset inequality). When the few own all the assets & the many have no assets, society is doomed!
The uber-wealthy accumulate assets and spend very little to none of their actual wealth, whereas the many are spending ALL of their income on basics for living and have nothing left over to spend to stimulate the economy.
Welcome to the Dystopian nightmare everyone's been warning us about.
Interesting and a wake up call.
Thank you. 😊😊
If you want a place to live, work for it and pay for housing like the rest of responsible society.
wilson should be ashamed just on the contamination minimum
Anything about working person?!?
What is this nonsense associating everything to human rights? And what is this society we have where only super lazy and super rich get benefits and tax free lifestyle?
Why don't you ask the question the other way around. If housing is a human right for everyone, who is going to pay to provide houses for free to those "entitled" ones, and who shall decide who are those to be entitled to free housing? Furthermore, what are you going to give to responsible citizens who work hard, live bellow their means and save to buy a house instead of spending all their money on nonsense? Shall we all stop working and demand "free housing" and free everything just because "human rights bro"?
When are we going to reward the silent majority for working hard, raising children and paying taxes instead of the super lazy and the super rich?
For much of human existence, housing was a given. It is only in this brave new era of capitalism that housing is big business.
Of course it's a human rights
And many governments and the big corporations should help families with kids to buy homes easier
We're the backbone of the society
Wow the Mexico City digital nomad lacks any self-awareness or substance to bring to this discussion. Granted, the greater share of culpability lies with the government allowing landlords and investment firms to hoard AirBnB properties, but digital nomads who contribute nothing to their host community nor integrate have no business crowding in cities–especially where their presence is already overly saturated.
Nothing that requires a forced labour of others should be a human right. There is no free lunch in economics
Housing is not a human right. Access to housing is a human right.
The meaning of "home as family" goes beyond just a physical space; it refers to the sense of belonging, love, support, and emotional security that comes from being with those we consider family. It is a place where individuals feel safe, understood, and connected through shared experiences, values, and unconditional care. Home, in this context, is not limited to a house or a location but is defined by the people and relationships that foster a nurturing and affirming environment. It's where one’s identity is rooted and where emotional bonds are strengthened. Let us enjoy our right
A human right.
Shelter is literally on the bottom layer of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Shelter is something we all NEED, and a place to lay one's head is NOT an investment opportunity for some rich schmuck to exploit other people's labor and income.
Is Housing a human right? What you really mean. Is it fair to ask others to pay someone’s housing while they spend their money on other stuff like fast food, starbuck and the newest phone. They live in a 2 bedroom alone in government hosing and not work. It’s not fair in a society where any able person can find work. Anyone can pull weeds .
Corrupt politicans around the world have sold everything to their master-puppeteers!
Personal responsibility
Haha Vancouver NIMBY's are a joke.
the feudal system did not die with the creation of the US or the Soviet Union, did not die in ww1 or ww2
the feudalism is back, big banking, big coorporation owning most of the housing
feudal 101, it uses capislm to trive.
The housing crisis is all engineer , just like the US…our corrupt and callous politicians are paid off by the real estate/ big landlord to keep supply low and very expensive, coupled with red tape and expensive permits. No logical reason that housing should be a challenge for any person working full time but it is.
If bitcoin becomes the currency, we will no longer have to invest in houses. House prices will drop to the utility price
There are no rights.
