Crocs Is Crushing It in China: Here’s Why
As global consumer trends shift and U.S. brands grapple with a tightening market in China, one company is making waves: Crocs. In stark contrast to the challenges faced by industry giants like Nike, Apple, and Starbucks, Crocs has emerged as a favorite among Chinese Gen Z consumers, achieving an impressive revenue growth of over 30% in the most recent quarter.
In a candid exploration, WSJ’s Jon Emont ventured into one of Crocs’ flagship stores in Shanghai to uncover the secret behind the brand’s remarkable success in a complex landscape marked by a weakening economy and geopolitical tensions with the United States.
Captivating the Gen Z Audience
The heart of Crocs’ strategy lies in its ability to resonate with the preferences of China’s burgeoning Gen Z demographic. This generation, known for its savvy online presence and distinct taste, has been a focal point for many brands. Crocs has skillfully tapped into this market by not only understanding Gen Z’s desire for comfort and individuality but also by aligning its offerings to resonate culturally.
Tailoring to Local Tastes
Crocs’ success is no happy accident; it’s a result of deliberate and strategic adjustments to cater specifically to Chinese consumers. From vibrant color palettes to unique collaborations with local designers, the brand has gone beyond its traditional image of comfort footwear to become a stylish statement. Emont highlights how this adaptability stands in stark contrast to other U.S. brands that have struggled to align their global identities with the nuanced preferences of Chinese shoppers.
Lessons for Other U.S. Brands
The insights gathered from Crocs provide a critical lesson for other American brands facing declines in the Chinese market. As Emont underscores, understanding local consumer behavior and cultural nuances is paramount for success. Brands that cling too tightly to their global strategies without local adaptation risk alienation in a rapidly changing market.
In conclusion, Crocs’ triumph in China amidst broader challenges reflects not just a savvy business approach but also a deep understanding of the values and preferences shaping the next generation of consumers. As other U.S. brands reevaluate their strategies, Crocs stands as a testament to the power of adaptability and cultural relevance in a global marketplace.

Crocs making alligators jealous.
Crazy how Crocs flipped the script—went from being a joke to a global trend. China’s huge market just shows how comfort + smart branding can change everything 👟🔥

Praying many human souls come and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, the only perfect sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the world!
1 John 5:4-5 KJV ❤
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
Does anyone remember those fake novelty black rim glasses from the 1960s and 1970s that came with the big nose attached to them? Apparently they are still around and worn by WSJ people.
I want to know one thing, are they cheaper there since they’re made there? Cause their prices got ridiculous for plastic.
"Constrained political environment", last time I tried criticizing Israel, ICE showed up at my front door. Lol
I have bought Chinese Croc knockoffs for years for the convenience rather than any fashion statement. My daughter gifted me a pair of real Crocs about 6 months ago and the difference is remarkable. It's a really durable product, unlike the knockoffs. I will stick with the genuine product from here on.
Been using crocs for 7 years, will never buy another brand or style . Cause it is comfortable and stylish enough for me
Just like we don’t say "pants is," we don’t talk about shoes in the singular either… Wow. I just really cannot believe this is the quality of the minds of todays journalists! They can’t even handle subject-verb agreement. Sad.
When China begins their civil war with Taiwan, global supply chains will face massive disruptions. It’s best to avoid doing business with China until the their civil war is resolved. Since Taiwan is part of China, Xi Jinping must repatriate it soon or risk disgracing the CCP.
What a bunch of croc! 😂
I still find it funny that I had NEVER heard of crocs before we saw the movie, Ideocracy. That is the first place I ever saw crocs. That movie is coming real in many ways before our own eyes.
I love how many reductive statements are in this video 😂😂
When the ccp tells you to buy it you buy it just like eletric cars

Get a reporter who can actually pronounce mandarin please. Also, “self express in a constrained political environment”. Lol.
They should ban Crocs due to national security concerns.
“A relatively constrained political environment” …why is that necessary to a story about crocs 😂😂😂
Hilarious, seeing that you can buy other shoes like crocs for much much cheaper. And no one is going to make fun cause they have no major branding.
why? wsj manages croc's factory in china
Crocs are amazing
American companies crushing it in China: good
Chinese companies crushing it in America: national security
🤔
Every American product is just better outside of America….
你把 ”天生自在“ 翻译成 'born to be free' ? 恕我直言这是小学生的翻译水平,和原文 'come as you are' 的精妙传神有云泥之别,当然如果这能和政治自由搭上关系一切又都说得通了
And here we are allowing one person to take away our choices and individuality
I want those keys for my keyboard ⌨️ why can’t we have that here??
I just came back from China for vacation. Crocs there are expensive, I just picked up a pair of knock-off Crocs. Same material, but for 10% of the cost of Crocs.

Self expression in an East Asian country is an oxymoron.
