How farmers are protecting the soil and our food security | DW Documentary
For a long time, soil was all but ignored. But for years, the valuable humus layer has been thinning. Farmers in Brandenburg are clearly feeling the effects of this on their sandy fields. Many are now taking steps to prepare their farms for the future.
Years of drought, record rainfall and failed harvests: we are becoming increasingly aware of how sensitively our environment reacts to extreme weather conditions. Farmers’ livelihoods are at stake. So is the ability of consumers to afford food.
For a few years now, agriculture that focuses solely on maximum yields has been regarded with increasing skepticism. It is becoming more and more clear just how dependent we are on healthy soils.
Brandenburg is the federal state with the worst soil quality in Germany. The already thin, fertile humus layer has been shrinking for decades. Researchers and farmers who are keen to experiment are combating these developments and looking for solutions. Priority is being given to building up the humus layer, which consists of microorganisms and fungi, as well as springtails, small worms and centipedes.
For Lena and Philipp Adler, two young vegetable farmers, the tiny soil creatures are invaluable helpers. On their three-hectare organic farm, they rely on simple, mechanical weed control, fallow areas where the soil can recover, and diversity. Conventional farmer Mark Dümichen also does everything he can to protect soil life on his land. For years, he has not tilled the soil after the harvest and sows directly into the field. His yields have stabilized since he began to work this way.
Isabella Krause from Regionalwert AG Berlin-Brandenburg is convinced after the experiences of the last hot summers that new crops will thrive on Brandenburg’s fields in the long term. She has founded a network of farmers who are promoting the cultivation of chickpeas with support from the scientific community.

❤ why is it like no one understands or nose. That you can create plant life that would fertilize the soil, the truth is you can do anything you would want it to or look for it to do. Are we responsible enough of people to do this yet?🎉
"The living soil is its [our] beating heart."
好的土壤,才能幫助植物,每個生命,需要植物,才能活著,死亡生命,土壤很重要,全世界整個地球,人類,動物,昆蟲,飛禽走獸,都必須有植物才能生命續存
I would suggest two things to my fellow no-tiller Mark Dümichen:
1. Consider the viability of introducing Panicum virgatum, both as a covercrop as well as pasture
2. Try to include cattle over farmed pasture on your crop rotation plans. Here, in Brazil, we have learned that ruminants' manure are very effective in enriching pedobiota
And my congratulations for pioneering no tillage in Europe
There are no farmers anymore. INSTEAD OF there is only MEGA CORP producing agricultural products. Poor gothic farmer and family, they lost everything.
This has been known for 20 years. Farmers and governments just never listen…
I farm herbs in Kenya and soil rotation is really important. You need to balance when dealing with nature.

Thanks!, Good
"Bread from Stones (Julius Hensel)" old technology for soil remineralization as complement also
Hello, I am researching digital environmental documentaries and would greatly appreciate your support. Since your channel has covered many of these films, and your audience could be considered a research community, would you be willing to publish a short survey (4 yes/no questions) for research purposes? I apologize for making this request here, but I have reached out via email without receiving a response. Thank you for your understanding!
I've heard great things about compost tea and our local recycling co-op (EcoCycle) provides it for the public during every growing season.
Awesome 👍
Yay, we’re all gonna live on chickpeas. That’s awesome. No thanks.
Soil scientists should participate in any Microbiome Neuro-axis Atlas Project to alleviate neurological and mental disorders for hundreds of millions of people because: 1. Microbiome produces neurotransmitters, vitamins, hormones, metabolites and precursors. 2. Human Microbiome has only identified thousands of microorganisms 3. There may be more in soil. Contact Sarkis Mazmanian and Chan Zuckerberg Foundation. 🎉
Very interesting. Most people know mono-culture over huge areas is very bad for the soil, the manufacturers (as to me they are not farmers in any way) know this too. They might be greedy souless shortsighted aholes but, they're not stupid. So, if treating the soil right takes one dollar/euro off their profits they will not do things this way, the right way. If they get an Oklahoma dustbowl they will just saturate the soil with harmful chemicals or cash in and move on.
excellent
Every steps counts 👍
We have used some of these techniques for over seven years we are seeing a good measurable yields and soil improvements
BS. You are full of lies and left propaganda. You do not know how life works. Always blame fossil fuel and climate change.
Avoid chemicals, mono culture farming, and overeating. Store rain and waste water.
Yall should be growing switchgrass 😂 grow it bale it then roll it out for your mulch layer and its your fertilizer and it captures carbon, then plant your veggies and after a few years of this process your jaws will drop
Australia needs to stop using so many toxic chemicals on the soil. We need some serious reeducation here. It's criminal.
I think the guy with the trees along agriculture field is up to something. I would put my money on him 😂
You mean we can't keep taking and taking from the Earth without giving back? You're kidding me right?
Stop using non organic fertilizer and pesticide
Plastic should not be used!
😘
Q: What is the difference between garbanzo and chick pea?
Answer: I have never had a Garbanzo pea on my face .
"What we are doing is beyong regenerative"….. yea, plasticmulching whole garden is very sustainable….
