How fires are destroying Bolivia’s forests | DW Documentary
Bolivia is burning. For months, flames have been consuming huge swathes of forest and pastureland. The situation is now so dramatic that the government has declared a national disaster. What’s behind this ecological catastrophe?
Bolivia’s forests and pastures were already devastated by wildfires in 2019, with around 5.9 million hectares affected. This year, 6.9 million hectares have been ravaged by fire – an area almost the size of Ireland, Sierra Leone or Sri Lanka. One contributing factor is deforestation in the Amazon, which is causing more frequent droughts and heatwaves. And while climate change is prolonging the dry seasons, the problem is exacerbated by Bolivia’s farmers burning down parts of the forest to provide land for agriculture. Some use slash-and-burn practices out of economic necessity and are unaware of the consequences. Others set fires in areas that do not belong to them in order to farm there illegally, or extract raw materials. The Bolivian government allows these practices to continue, through lax laws and agricultural subsidies that encourage farmers to expand their land.
Indigenous peoples are especially hard hit by land grabbing and the destruction of the forests.

Transnational companies buy people to do this. It's like a domino effect: Transnational companies buy politicians, politicians buy people who buy other people and we end up with this. It's so frustrating.
Better replant fast
When you mention that there is no other option than burning the material that was cut, do you say this because you have never heard of Syntropic Agroforestry? The option is to organize the material on the ground in rows and plant it in the middle. Later in the film there are even people organizing rows of material in a rudimentary way, but then instead of growing crops in the middle of them, they set fire to them. There are many videos showing how to do it correctly for different types of cultivation, just search.
For important context most fire fighting forces in Latin America are funded by public donations at traffic stops
It may sound bad, but since they are all volunteers, they are passionate about what they do and seem to attack fires with even better efficiency than their US and EU counterparts.
Govt's worldwide are staffed by idiots. Everyone of us can tell true stories of their incompetence. But here, this is coupled with corruption, a very toxic mix. And as per usual it's the poor who suffer.
15:07 western highlands not "eastern"
It's a criminal act
Has Bolivia heard of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration? The rest of the world is restoring 30% of nature.
Should have kept our numbers below 1 billion
Madagascar, my home country is a sad example to learn from before it's too late. 80% forest coverage to 15% now and still losing forest as we speak.
I call all the people who do just jobs in and within industrie and money
LAY DOWN WAR (the Earth our Mother and all Life) WORK!!
Worldwide.
Its on us the humans
Work Life and Peace only.
Balu the bear song💚
*How our excessive consumption are destroying Bolivia's forests..
Thanks for giving my country an international voice to ask for help and controls to these awful fires
This video tells nothing these people are doing nothing…explain why show who are destroying Bolivia…
Dirty and stupid gouvernment there😢😢
Will they end up with dry rivers like Amazonia in Brazil? This planet is small for so much greed everywhere.
Who thought the apocalypse would be so cinematic.
so much ignorance and greed that makes me sick to the stomach. In the last 50 years South America lost over 80% of its fauna because of examples displayed in this doc. Sadly, the only true virus and destroyer of nature are humans.
This starts as jungle clearing and ends up being a catastrophe.
Unfortunately people are Evil. They wish to own ur lands and make u a slave to it.
All good people see this Evil growing and its sowing seeds of destruction.
They old ways will perish…
Horrifying and disgusting
Thank to Deutsche Welle for put this tragedy on the spotlight. The majority of those fires are perpetrated deliverately on purpose and as the documentary shows there is links to pollitical al economic interests, even related to cocaine trafficking. As matter if fact, this documentary should have a second episode.
Thank you for bringing attention to this critical issue. Our government continues to ignore the gravity of these fires and refuses to declare a state of emergency. In fact, they endorse controlled burns to exploit the land for agricultural and commercial purposes. Shockingly, if the fire spreads beyond control, the penalty is a mere $0.36 PER HECTARE, a slap on the wrist for the destruction of our forests and ecosystems.
Where is the so called respect for the PACHAMAMA (Mother Earth) that Aymara and Quechua people claim to respect???
A few weeks ago, there was an initiative to ban or restrict this so called "Arson Laws". They were summarily rejected in Congress by both the official party and the opposition. So this is a big business that is unfortunately destroying the country's Ecosystem.
Slash and burn is an extremely harmful practice to the land. It's a quick way to get new farmland BUT the land is used up in a matter of a few years and won't grow anything for a very long time after that. It is believed by some to be what initially produced the Sahara desert that spans much of Africa.
god knows who greedy agricultural boss is causing the fire to have more land to grow….
greed has no end. you value something only when lost
I hope all the minery, soy crops, livestock and realstate companies behind all this need to be investigated an sued. The only thing left is to make the land that was burned not available for purchase and designated for reforestation an not for profit use.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊🙋🌹💗🌴🌲🌿
Someone want the land?
