How Gen Z is shaping US politics | DW Documentary
With state and national elections approaching in the US, the country is more divided than ever before. Also on the campaign trail are a range of young politicians fighting for office. Will they be able to overcome the growing polarization in society?
Wyatt Gable is a 22-year-old Donald Trump supporter hoping to represent the Republicans in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Sabrina Bousbar, a 27-year-old Democrat from Florida, wants to become the first woman Generation Z member of Congress. Policy-wise the two budding politicians are worlds apart. As for the presidential election between Trump and Kamala Harris: both express serious concerns about their country’s future, should the candidate from the rival side win on November 5.
Like many Americans, Gable and Bousbar fear the political divide is insurmountable – a divide reflected in the respective youth and student organizations. While the right-wing populist “Turning Point USA” bangs the drum for Trump, 17-year-old William He has launched a center-left alternative movement in the shape of “Dream for America”. For all that divides the camps, Gable, Bousbar and He are each hoping that the deep divisions will not worsen and tear their society apart.
What explains this polarization, and is there a way of overcoming it? Can a new generation of activists and politicians help to bridge the gulf?

Russia or China don't even have to do anything. Racial & Identity warfare has America in a chokehold. Identity politics is like 1 of Americas biggest distractions & vulnerability. It would be poetic, racism built America & ends up being the death of it. Watching from Timbuktu.🍿
Is the narrator AI?
The Democratic Party is the party of cultural Marxism, neo-cons, and the military industrial complex.
How is Trump not a threat to democracy? He’s said he wants to rule forever himself and he has openly said he wants to use the military against US citizens. Sounds pretty threatening to me.
I left, the states after trump was running the first time. It was a glaring sign the states were to far gone. As a sexual minority it was safer to leave. In S. Korea you had massive testing during covid19 all free, no mass shortages of groceries ranked best place besides New Zealand during covid19 to be the states was ranked the worst. S.KOREA you had to wear mask in all public and government buildings including public transit. Had to show vaccination to travel out of city, out of country, return to work. That conservative at college angry over restrictive policy at his college. Americans, are so ignorant I don't think they understand what a pandemic means that would involve understanding science.
Haha
Turning Point USA says they are non-partisan??? 😂😂😂😂 give me a break dude.
The problem is Donald Trump, he divided the people of America and created racism and hate among them.
"inciteful" is not a word. I think you meant inciting and not insightful? 😅
When a guy tries to overthrow the government and you don’t hold him accountable, you only have yourselves to blame. There may be a horrific price paid for sacrificing the rule of law.
The young are always radical, but as they grow older they tend to get more conservative. At 16 it's "yeah, let everyone in, give everyone welfare, take from the rich, everyone should be equal" but when they go to work, have a family etc it's more "why should I give my hard earned money to people who are doing nothing for the country, not contributing to anything" From the UK and I have never (65 years old) seen such division in a American election or in general. I wish you all well, whoever you vote for, you still are all Americans.
I am not sure whether the young man who said that their rhetoric (Republican) is nowhere near as vicious as the Democrats is very delusional. I am sorry, but he really is. And I say that as an European following US politics for a long time, it was also part of my University Degree, so I've been watching US politics for 23 years now, since my Uni years. Has he ever listened to Trump supporters and their rhetoric? With all due respect, MAGA people live in their own worlds and many if not majority are not willing to even listen to reason and arguments. It's sad to watch, because Americans like to talk about their country as the greatest in the world, an example of democracy, but it's just not. And to people around the world, since you elected Donald Trump as your president in 2016, you have truly become a joke to the world. I am a Christian, but I could never get behind a man such as Donald Trump and the "values" he and his representatives represent. The old and respective Republican party gradually disappeared and Donald Trump turned it into an aggressive, vulgar, immoral and violent movement. It takes guts to admit when you are wrong about someone or something, but I do admire the Republicans who stood up and put their country over party and are voting for Harris. Good luck US!
Woke liberalism is coming to an end.
Butcher Putin (yeah the same country which want Alaska back) is only waiting for the election of his friend Trump to invade other countries. Has the American electorate any idea of who they're choosing and the consequences of their vote?
Why does he have to be an Arsenal fan FFS
What’s crazy to me is people voting for Harris act like it’s 2016 all over again if Trump was as dictatorial as you claimed why wasn’t he and the Republican Party being so back when they held all 3 branches of government?
"Communist, Marxist'
It's impressive to be so politically and historically illiterate
I find the Republicans have a very narrow view on the issues. Covid can not simply be considered in terms of personal freedom. The threats to deport all illegal immigrants, some who have lived and worked in the USA for 30 years. It's more complex.
Kamala Harris is prepared to be a president for all Americans, calling the citizens " the promise of America".
America is ideologically castrated. People standing for ideas and policies that will lead to their own demise. It's fascinating to see how oblivious and uninformed many Americans are. Mainstream media is a propaganda machine now.
I've been a left wing supporter for a long time, but not anymore. I don’t see my values reflected in what they are promoting right now.
One of the reasons is the biased reporting, like this one DW just presented . How come I only see extreme perspectives from right-wing politics represented. Why isn’t there any mention of extreme statements or ideologies on the left side as well? There are more than plenty out there.. complete radical people pushing for a shutdown of systems that are against their personal views.. but democracy is not about your personal feelings, it is about what creates a better outcome and stability for a society
DW is one such new channel spreading propaganda leaning to far left! hard to admit.🤣
The US needs to invest in education BIGLY and badly!
Trump is going to put tariff on Germany. No wonder DW hate Trump.
How do you have the American Dream without mandatory accounting in the schools?
Adam Smith wrote "read, write and ACCOUNT" multiple times. He used the word 'education' Eighty Times.
So when/where have economists with PhDs, either Democratic or Republican been advocating mandatory accounting in the schools?
I am black. Your comments of Charlie Kirk are wrong and taken out of context. I have listened to Charlie much more than you have and he is not a racist. That's the problem with media these days, you have become ideological in how you observe society and that filters in your analysis of issues. You will parade anyone who you disagree with and paint him as an absolute worst person. He is not a racist. I am certain Charlie was referring to affirmative action and DEI, when someone gets a job because they are a DEI hire, what any rational thinking person, including myself as a black person, is, are they qualified? Anyway, polarization is largely driven by media, most of the issues that are hotly contested on cultural issues are mostly private issues that are being thrust into the public space by media. Why would my views on gays and lesbians be important to public office?
History books will almost be psychological analysis in the future because all this mass derangement and cult behavior cannot be explained as anything other than some kind of disorder. Please vote for Kamala and get rid of Trump for good, USA.
how dumb people are: if all stays as it is, then you have to be scared because Abortion and Pedophilia are the death sentence for America. God is tired of it
Dear Americans: most important thing now: do not participate in anything HALLOWEEN cause then God must permit Satan to hurt you. And if majority of Americans celebrate this devil’s feast day, then Satan will get the permission to rig the election and/or devastate the USA in a major way.
Rather stay home, pray, fast. And remember: we in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia pray hard for
America too, We can win !!!🎀🌹🌹🌹
I like the 80s synth pop background music
I think US politics are ridiculous. Polarization is such a waste of time.
Me being an Indian Liberal i want Donald Trump to win, because we saw the double standards of Democrats who claim to be peaceful and liberal but support genocide, give unwavering support to Netanyahu to kill children.
Democrats say it will be worse during Trump Administration ok a straight forward enemy is always better than a backstabbing friend.
The United States is not a democracy, one might say. the country is a two party system. you can only choose between candidates in the republican or democratic party it is completely idiotic. in most of the world where other democracies are, those countries have more than three to four parties or more. in my country norway there are ten major parties in the government that you can choose from. so yes there are other small parties in the usa but those parties are only pushed down by the democrats and republicans. and Norway, my country, is the most democratic country on earth. The United States is nowhere near the top ten democracies in the world on the UN's website.
Call me a sceptic but it seems to me that turning elections into a culture and race war is the art to hide from all voters the reality that both sides of the US house work tireless for the 1% of the 1% that are billionaires and major corporates. Both of those powerfull forces fund the campaigns to support their own interests. Meanwhile the middle class are squashed and the working poor become the working poor below the poverty line……. It would be all convenient if the obscenely rich and powerful did not need to go through this charade.

Will He is awesome but that guy next to him is Nathaniel Pelton another rising star I went to college with. Love u brother! 🙌
TPUSA is an actual cancer. They actively promote eugenics and “anti-communism” which just means anything that’s remotely accepting.

I’m sorry but when you hear that old lady talking about lack of respect and polarization in this country as that party meeting of over 50 year olds stand lockstep singing the pledge of allegiance and tirades abt communism is actually so hypocritically hilarious
So, he was allegedly not allowed to eat bc of a vaccine mandate… but that never happened under the GOP controlled board of trustees…
I’m so happy to see Gen Z and younger candidates organize together. I was very disappointed with the Republican gentleman dismissing a constituent that way, how can you expect to get elected like that? But then again, North Carolina is the land of gerrymandering, and there’s always room for another Bo Hines or Madison Cawthorne; and we all know how that ended up.
