How Germany's elite research institution fails young scientists | DW Documentary
The Max Planck Society is a figurehead of scientific research in Germany: a big name, a stellar reputation, and top-notch facilities. Anyone who makes it to one of its 84 institutes belongs to the elite: an organization that counts 31 Nobel Prize laureates among its ranks. But there is a dark side to its facade.
For months, DW’s investigative unit, along with German news magazine Der Spiegel, has investigated allegations of misconduct perpetrated by senior scientific staff at Max Planck institutes. We spoke to more than 30 young scientists, many who described abusive behavior and toxic environments. They were afraid to report the abuse, fearing the consequences, and the few who did report say they were discouraged from doing so.
DW goes behind the scenes of Germany’s elite research institutes to find out why abusive behavior and toxic work environments remain resilient in the face of opposition.

We brazilian are very brave people
The abuse is common in many scientific labs – the principal investigators are not kept accountable.
I doubt this documentary will come as a shock to any doctoral student in the sciences in germany. This is not a max planck problem, it's a german acadmia problem
I wanted to comment by sharing my experience. However, I still feel terrified about writing it here. DW investigated only the Max Planck institutes, which is just the tip of the iceberg. The problem is much more abundant and horrible at the universities and other research institutes, especially against international students.
Lol he cried….
Build their own culture, get out if don't like it. That's it. Why bothering or be bothered?
That's how the American survived for years & years to come. Come to USA.
I moved to Germany from Denmark in 2017 and worked in a few technical science roles. However, I found the work culture in Germany to be extremely toxic. People often take credit for your ideas, discredit you, and even fire you without hesitation. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend investing your energy in Germany—it feels like they’ve already lost their way.
The president investigated himself, and unsurprisingly found no wrongdoing.
Great documentary DW, I think its a bit unfair to only target Max Planck. It would have been fairer to interview young researchers from other institutions as well. I think you will find that there are bad professors everywhere. Ask any PhD. They will each know a handful of colleagues that were mis-treated. Some of my colleagues also terminated their contracts because it was unbearable and they couldn't see it through.
Professors and judges …. big issue when there is no possible oversight.
Even so , coming from max plank you should be able to find something else.
This gave me anxiety on whether I should pursue science or not, but I guess it's like that no matter what field you enter.
I had a similar experience. Nothing keeps professors in check. It can be quite uncomfortable in academia. Yes, professors are under a lot of pressure to publish, but that doesnt mean that they have to be rude and mis-treat young researchers. If you create a good atmosphere in your lab you will get more output. Unfortunately professors don't seem to understand that because they are not teachers and have no experience managing teams.
Power and corruption go hand in hand. This case reminded me of the scandals in the Vatican and the Catholic Church. Who could suspect institutions that are above suspicion? We then have the perfect environment for abuse.
It's Max Planck, it's a risk worth taking.
Snowflakes
Nothing is free….you have to fight for everything.
Power is everywhere wether your are educated or not but you have to face power in the form of money or designation 😊
Superb journalism…
Not hesitant to speak the truth..
Highly appreciated..
Groundbreaking reseach in Germany 🤣
31 nobels is crazy 🤣🤣
