Exploiting Russia’s Size: How Ukraine is Turning the Tables in the Ongoing Conflict
In the protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the vastness of Russian territory has historically served as a formidable military advantage. However, as highlighted by DW Kyiv correspondent Nick Connolly, this once-powerful asset may now be morphing into a significant vulnerability. In a revealing analysis, Connolly articulates how Ukraine is strategically leveraging long-range drones and precision strikes to undermine Russia’s sprawling supply lines and military defenses.
Rather than committing troops and armored vehicles to overt counter-offensives, Ukraine is adopting a more calculated approach. The goal? To increase the costs of the war for Russia and make its military presence more onerous. By targeting critical infrastructure—such as oil facilities, logistics routes, and military assets—the Ukrainian forces are forcing Moscow to defend an extensive and widely spread expanse of territory, including critical routes supplying occupied Crimea.
This stand-off approach underscores a shift in wartime strategy, where attrition, rather than outright conquest, becomes the focus. With every strategic strike, Ukraine compels Russia to stretch its resources thinner, creating opportunities for vulnerability. As Connolly points out, however, the situation remains precarious. Recent attacks from Russia on Ukrainian cities serve as a stark reminder of Moscow’s capability to inflict substantial damage, further complicating the delicate balance that both sides must navigate in this war of attrition.
As the landscape of the conflict continues to evolve, Ukraine’s innovative tactics may provide a blueprint for engaging a larger adversary, transforming Russia’s geographical strengths into operational weaknesses. The implications of this shift will likely shape the future of the conflict and the broader regional security dynamics for years to come.

Stanovnivi Kieva su opet bili u podrumima😂
Ako tako nastave pretvoriće se u Šišmişe🦇😂
Ukraine must continue hammering Russian supply lines! Russians are expendable so Putin can just throw more bodies into the mix 🇷🇺🤡💪
Remember Russia is nuclear-armed state. Don't celebrate too early!
Great achievement, Ukraine. Congrats.🎉
The victory is for Russia ✊🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺 1:27
This voice is all too familiar. What other YouTube channel does he host?
There's no dilemma. russia will attack cities no matter what Ukraine does or does not do. (Short of surrendering.)
So it's best for them to hit russia as hard as possible so that it may collapse sooner.
SUPER POWERS….take lessons from Afghanistan ,Iraq and Vietnam!!!!
from the updated refinery bingo: Angarsk and Achinsk are still really far away deep in Russia, but Komsomol may be reachable from the other side.
David and Goliath
Putin ' S gay parade
Lead engineer of Firepoint wrote on X that the latest generation of their drones (those that attacked the Omsk refinery) has a maximum range of 3400 km which means most of Siberia's pipeline infrastructure is now in range, too.
A country selling gas shouldn't have waged a war of annihilation against a country selling matches.
😂😂😂😂
Success in retreat
Punish Russia. Make it realize the real cost of invading independent nations.
The three-day special military operation became a five-year special military obliteration.
If the nato wins over russia.
Whos next? Thats what im askin
Next year's May Day parade is going to have a lot of flag drapped hearses instead of Tanks
This June was the second month in a row where Russia lost net ground in Ukraine (even with the current russian advances in Konstantiniyvka), so Russian supporters can't even argue anymore that Russia is being hit but advancing, as happened in the months after the fall of Pokrovsk when Ukraine changed their drone focus to casualties instead of combat vehicles and as a result casualties increased
Russia might (I imagine they will) adapt and start advancing again, but it's definitely not as sunny as tankies make it to be
If you keep up this narrative, Ukraine will eventually vanish. Russia is too vast for Ukraine to overwhelm with drones or missiles. Europe is more likely to run out of weapons and men before Russia runs out of resources.
So Ukraines targeting civilian infrastructure is good, but Russia doing this is bad.
Ukraine is also targeting civilian vessels and killing civilian crews, but agin this is ignored by DW.
Russia is advancing slowly and surely.
The strait of hormouz is closed, very soon the price of oil will explode, the world needs Russia oil and will be desperate for it.
Russia now needs to go full nato, smash all of Ukraines infrastructure specifically bridges, rail, road, ports etc.
Ukrain 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 keep on fighting that savage Crazy Putin 😂😂😂
hit soft targets like military recruitment offices, events, military parade
Nick "kind of" Connolly
Take note China stay chill
Just let me live long enough to see Zelenskyy as a retired victorious war leader, and Putin and Trump as defeated old men.
Just here for the salty Not Russian comments.
All the fighting aside, there's going to be a "mysterious" spike in cancers a couple of decades from now
Hey 🇷🇺 Those with gas houses should not throw matches
Thanks 🇺🇦!
Hm. The whole point of this war is Russia's assessment of Ukraine being too close for comfort. And Amerika likewise assessing they can control Russia from Ukraine. That really is what is all about.
The story with Ukraine is not over yet.
However the claims or narrations of this war maybe, the obvious truth is that: if USA soil is attacked the way Russia is being targeted on its own territory by Ukraine with the help and control of Western intelligences and weapons, without wasting time the next response will be nuclear strike from USA.
Then 2secs everywhere will be silent, there will never be a single fly or drone strike on USA territory again, all intelligences, joint production and weapons supplied by other countries to facilitate the strikes on USA soil will seize quicker than quick, immediately and unconditional; after all is not up to this level of attacks that USA struck Japan's populated area with nuclear weapons, so is not a new scenerio!!!
Is only obvious that Russia's patience and Putin's restraint is too long!!!👌
WE ARE EVEN SURPRISED!!!
That is what you get for tickling the cat's balls 😂😂😂
It's beyond crazy when a man starts throwing rocks on others when he lives in a glass house. Inconceivably utter lack of self awareness.
Russia >>>>>> entire western hemisphere
Time for far east to be renamed far west. Time to learn mandarin there.
80% of the defenses could be near the Ukranian border. The quantity and quality of ukranian drones/operators makes the difference more than the size of Russia itself.
It's not like the drones teleport. They pass over the same areas no matter where they land.
"Never get involved in a land war in Asia" – Infamous words from The Princess Bride. It never goes well. Okay, in this case, maybe Europe. but the principle stands.
Analysis by the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies found that Russia has suffered 450,000 battlefield deaths and 1.4 million injuries since it started its full-scale war. Its estimated casualty rate of over 30,000 per month exceeds its recruitment rate of 27,000 soldiers per month. This year Russia is calculated to have lost 8 soldiers for every 1 Ukrainian casualty, up from a rate of 3:1 during the first years of the war, according to the CSIS.
