In the bustling city of Tokyo, there is a man named Shoji Morimoto who has found a unique way to make a living – by literally “doing nothing.” In a world where loneliness and isolation are common, Morimoto offers his services as a rented friend for a fee of $100.
Many may question the concept of paying for someone’s companionship, but for those who are struggling with social connections or simply need a listening ear, Morimoto’s services can be a lifeline. Whether it’s going for a walk, having a meal together, or just sitting in silence, Morimoto is there to provide the presence and support that his clients need.
In a fast-paced society like Japan, where the pressure to succeed and conform can be overwhelming, the idea of a rented friend may seem unusual. However, it highlights the importance of human connection and the impact that a simple act of kindness can have on someone’s life.
So the next time you find yourself feeling lonely or in need of a friend, remember that there are people like Shoji Morimoto out there, ready to provide the companionship and support that you seek – for a fee of $100.

This video is actually depressing
Litteraly Sean o'malley and his coach tim welch
I feel this was an uncharacteristically mean video and Drew missed the point completely. This guy’s not trying to be an entertainer. He’s not a tour guide. He’s a genuine do nothing guy. He doesn’t initiate the conversation, he responds. I can understand the appeal for Japanese women who don’t want to be alone in a restaurant or bar. You don’t want to have to keep up conversation or worry about being hit on. He’s there to be quiet company. To me, he comes across as very safe and respectful.
14:35 at that moment he was contemplating leaving
question after question i would be annoyed af if i was him.
Hi 👋😊
Drew i hope yhu can maje his day ❤
Mahdi ba
Do nothing guy is kinda boring. But Drew is cool ❤
oh tokyo wild👍️😇😆
this is "rent a japanase guy to bully" 😀
What a boring person to be around omg. I would rather rent a rock or a leaf 😭
I like Japan and Japan is great for video games wrestling food manga anime culture and history
Don’t be fooled this guy lives a double life.
Sorry, but the fries in Ice-Cream is a no go for me. It's just nasty to me, but if it's your thing, go for it.
Mais o cara tem expressão nenhuma.. nem parece feliz em fazer isso…
Alugar alguém fica parecendo fantasma do seu lado 😂
Who would want to hire a mute no personality npc to walk with you? I get the whole aspect of hire dad/boyfriend/whatever especially in Japan but one you can't really talk with? I would feel even more awkward with him than going to a restaurant alone
No
I feel like everyone should learn the languages of other places… you learn so much when there is not a language barrier
It doesn't seem to me Shoji or anyone else working at being a visiting companion is doing nothing. Taking his time and actively participating in activities accompanying folks IS work, although it isn't the same kind of "work" someone may work at welding, hammering, cooking or babysitting, but is work, nevertheless.
People should find better ways to waste thier time. It is strange, he's pretty boring, he needs to get help. Looks very sad.
Hallu sir 😢 I'm from Philippines can u help us I'm homeless here in Philippines plzzzzzzz
This is my kind of job 😂😏 One more reason why I love Japan.
I've seen videos of renting Japanese girlfriends , they're waaay more fun than this guy 😂
I would like to add that there ARE services (nonsexual or intimate in nature) that do "rent" ou t accompaniment for periods of time, for social events and for participation when a "renter" doesn't want to do an activity alone… here in the United States and probably also in other countries that have individualistic culture norms. Not all People in the U.S. or elsewhere have a Family-Centered culture across the board, wherein a Family member would be accompanying someone for activities, appointments, travel, etc.
How can you do this for a living and have zero personality
You clearly have no idea what this guy is doing. He's not talkimg to people and doesn't want to make friends but you keep trying anyway…and saying that he had no personality is just insulting and disrespectful. You have no idea what he's like in his private life, that was just his job.
The most cringeworthy video
japan is depressing
I need to hire a friend 😂
After watching this guy and what he does, I think this job is perfect for me. 😂
Seems like a little piece of hell to me, sad
Real title: “Hiring An NPC for the Day”
😂😂😂😂
Nothing. I’m inspired 😅
I think his job may also work in South Korea, but other than that I don't think anywhere else.
sorry i need a refund that's the shittest friend
How cute!!!! I want to rent a friend!
Its not really hiring a "friend" if they dont really behave like a friend 🤷♀️ 😅 but if it is to hire him "to do nothing" as was mentioned, then he's perfect for the job!
Western buying friends/Gfriend in asian countries and asian are living life alone, single
You should have had a lie detector as well as a translator to understand that… person
What a soul crushing job
Can’t believe ppl actually pay for this lol
i can make 100 dollars a day/ 80k a year. so im at work like 17 days a week?
I wonder if any of his gigs ever had a happy ending!😉! Px
If he worked every single day of the year, he would only make 36,500… Why did you say "makes $80,000 a year"
What is this nonsense?
mcdonalds is really disgusting
I am INDIA
Dam, I need to move to Japan. I could have a job doing nothing? I would be a multi-millionaire. Lol This was an interesting video. It's crazy to see how some countries can benefit from the rarest jobs for there mental health. Truly an eye opening video.
