International adoptions – A global scandal | DW Documentary
In the last 60 years, over a million “orphans” have been adopted by Western families. Many of them are now discovering that their past is a lie. International adoptions are at the center of an unprecedented scandal.
This scandal is far-reaching. It involves children stolen from their mothers during the Pinochet dictatorship, as well as people described as Africa’s “fake orphans”. The film follows investigative journalists, activists and researchers in South Korea, Sweden, France, Chile, Germany and Switzerland. How was this huge, lucrative market able to flourish? And why does it still exist today?
Even today, women are manipulated, threatened or deceived into giving up their babies – often with the blessing of state authorities. The fraudulent practices persist despite the Hague Convention, which has governed international adoption since 1993. That is because the system is flawed and encourages corruption.
In many cases, these practices come to light mainly due to pressure from adopted children who have grown into adults. After discovering the dubious conditions of their adoptions, they begin to search for their birth parents and demand explanations. These searches are often easier to conduct these days, thanks to social media, the Internet and the availability of genealogy websites.

I either watched a program or read an article about international adaption decades ago (I think in 1990s). I had a suspicious feeling about if those children were actually on sale because I saw how much cost to adapt by county and cheapest ones were from South Korea. You couldn’t have a stable “fix priced” commodity unless you have a reliable supply chain. I think most of the people involved international adaption knew (including adapted parents) something was wrong, but kept their silence because an international adaption was/is very expensive and uncertain. So none wanted to ruin the opportunity.
Ordinary people bought great Change
God is Great
Heriðitary rights to properties, ecoonimical benefits etc
Interpol should investigate & DNA made obligation for adoption.
I don't know about Korea and China, but I know about Vietnam. There are two cases where children are abandoned most often. One of them is mothers who abandon their daughters to give birth to sons. They do so to make their husband's family proud of having a son to continue the family line. The main reason is the male-dominated ideology. The other case is girls who get pregnant before getting married (according to East Asian beliefs, this type of woman is a failure and she will be scolded by her mother-in-law when she gets married again) and men also do not accept single women raising children. These mothers have abandoned their children. Blaming the US government for taking away the children of poor women sounds ridiculous. If you are an orphan adopted to the US, feel lucky because most Vietnamese orphans will have almost no future ahead. Simply because the welfare system is too weak.
Video too long; did not watch! Please shorten to under 15 minutes!
I'm not satisfied about the way the kind of left off the countries orchestrating this…
Assim como vários governos fingiram não ver a ditadura no Chile e suas atrocidades, hoje vemos o mesmo acontecer no Sudão, Palestina, Síria e segue a lista.
Why go through the trouble of trafficking children who have loving parents into adoption when there are millions of abandoned children around the world who are desperate to be adopted. Is this really about supply and demand or something more sinister is taking place?
I was an adopted infant from Vietnam.. this makes me wonder if anyone’s looking for me… I was always told how much I was loved and that this was for the best but it makes me wonder
In the 80s more than 3000 children were taken by a gang led by Arlete Hilu in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina in Brazil. A scandal that few people talk about it.
Thank you for another excellent documentary DW! This sort of investigative journalism is why I am subscribed to this channel. Some of the stuff you publish is painful to watch but is necessary because it reveals the depravity of humanity: For a few dollars of profit, a child can be sold. Evil. Pure evil. Again, thank you. Maybe someday in the future, the human race will choose to stop committing evil acts against fellow human beings.
Russia did that to the Ukrainian children! That is genocide!
🐎Sorry, I dont beleive these things until I hear it from the horses mouth…people who had been adopted and they state it was bad. What if most of them are happy or it was not a big deal? I know crazy, right.
Stealing children of poor women into a modern life is not a crime compared to the crime of growing the same kids in a very difficult and hostile environment.
At least they have better life
Among them, there are thousands of children whose parents have died, they have no relatives, they live alone. If they fall into the wrong hands, what can happen to this childer Such a human rights organization should take action on this.
As a child born in 1981 I vaguely remember how popular it was to adopt children from china, russia, and vietnam in my American church. It was highly recommended and a bragging right for some people
😢😢
It is sad to see the plight of the children in Palestine, as Israel is committing genocide on such a large scale. If these children were trafficked and used for wrongdoing,
DW should do an expose on South Korean orphanages. When I was a teacher there I volunteered for KROOM only to find out most of the kids weren't orphans, their parents wanted to remarry and its bad luck to bring a child from a previous marriage into a new one. Maybe its better these kids at least a family rather than staying in the system on their own till they're 18
Taking kids from their real families, using poor moms for money, and treating children like things, not humans.
DNA?
The title is unacceptable. I've got western friends who adopted, first a Chinese girl, then a Chinese boy. They turned out well. Calling that a scandal is a scandal.
As usual, many thanks! Your storytelling is brave and investigative. We need much more of this!
