IOC reaffirms controversial win of Algerian boxer; clarifies not related to transgender issue

The International Olympic Committee has stood behind their decision to allow Algerian boxer Imane Khelif to compete at the Paris Summer Olympics, despite previous controversy surrounding a “testosterone test.” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams emphasized that Khelif is a woman and should be able to compete as such, stating, “This is not a transgender case.” Adams further clarified that scientifically, this was not a situation of a man fighting a woman.

During a match at the Olympics, Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew less than a minute into the fight after facing powerful blows from her Algerian opponent. Both boxers had been disqualified at the 2023 World Championships for failing IBA eligibility rules that prohibit athletes with male XY chromosomes from competing in women’s events.

The IOC’s defense of Khelif’s participation in the Olympics has sparked debate and raised questions about fairness and inclusivity in sports. The decision to allow Khelif to compete has brought attention to the complexities of gender identity and participation in athletics at the highest level of competition.
