Israel sends more ground troops into Lebanon as first combat deaths reported

Israel has escalated its ground offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, committing more soldiers to the operation. The Israeli military has reported its first combat deaths, with eight personnel losing their lives in clashes with the Iran-backed militia.

Hezbollah claims to have destroyed three Israeli tanks near the border town of Maroun El Ras, though this has not been independently verified. Israel has responded by continuing to carry out airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut and southern Lebanon.

DW’s Beirut Bureau Chief Mohamad Chreyteh visited the Dahiyeh suburb in the south of Beirut, where Israeli airstrikes have targeted alleged Hezbollah facilities. The Israeli government’s stated goal is to prevent Hezbollah from launching rockets into northern Israel, a concern heightened by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Hezbollah is labeled a terrorist group by Israel, as well as by many other countries, including Germany and the US. Lebanon has suffered heavy casualties, with the health minister reporting over 1,000 people killed in the last two weeks of fighting.

The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has led to a devastating toll on both sides, with no end in sight to the violence ravaging the region.
