One of Amos’ most iconic roles was that of Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries, ‘Roots,’ where he portrayed the resilient African man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. His powerful performance in the series earned him critical acclaim and solidified his place as a powerful force in the industry.
In addition to ‘Roots,’ Amos also made a lasting impression on audiences as James Evans Sr. in the beloved ’70s sitcom, ‘Good Times.’ He brought humor, heart, and depth to the character, making James Evans Sr. one of the most memorable TV dads of all time.

I've been a professional chauffeur in NJ for many years. About 10 years ago, I had the distinct honor of driving Mr. Amos home 🏡 In all of my years of driving, I had never had a client ask me to come inside and offer to make me a cup of coffee ☕️ except for Mr. Amos. It was one of the nicest gestures that I can remember anyone doing. RIP Mr. Amos 🙏❤️

Laying it on a bit thick with the "America's Dad" thing, aren't you? I promise you, not one person in 1977 thought of James Evans as their "Dad."

On the list of American TV Dads, John Amos was unfortunately not given enough credit. John Amos was America's TV Dad long before Bill Cosby and tougher than beloved Uncle Phil, played by the late James Aubry. We just lost James Earl Jones and now John Amos 🥀💔
