José Mujica – Life in a globalized world | DW Documentary
Uruguay’s former president José Alberto “Pepe” Mujica Cordano was an icon of the left. In this film, his advocacy for a fairer world is interwoven with the globalized stories of African migrants, Spanish and Japanese workers.
The documentary blends stories of people on three continents: African migrants who want to flee to Europe, Spanish workers who can no longer afford to live where they are, and Japanese employees who are lonely in the modern world. While continents, social classes, and ethnicities may separate us, at the heart of our human existence we are all one. We all have wishes, desires, hopes and dreams. It is here that opportunity lies, not only to address the negative effects of globalization, but to create something new together.
The former President of Uruguay, José ‘Pepe’ Mujica (20 May 1935 – 13 May 2025), guides us through this film, reminding us time and time again of our humanity.

Most of people don't have luxury to contemplate about life. Social injustice prevails so long as the humans exist. They're not taught to restrain the bad egos.
💔
🕊️🕯️❤️
Many knows these issues and feels it as well. However, the current system is sustaining because there is no better option that the current one. Therefore, I suggest you to come up with new Documentaries that gives viable alternatives/ideas to challenge the current system.

"Do not make the mistake of my time. The more divided we are, the more dominated we will be. Therefore: study, do not waste time, take care of democracy. Democracy is not perfect, it is full of defects because they are our human defects, but so far we have not found anything better. Therefore, it is easy to lose it and difficult to regain it. You have to take care of it" (07/13/2023, speech to young people at the 59th Congress of the National Union of Students of Brazil, Brasilia)

Dear:
It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of the former President of Uruguay, His Excellency José Mujica. In this moment of profound sadness and pain, I share my solidarity with the Uruguayan people.
Former Uruguayan President José Mujica, known as "Pepe", has died at the age of 89.
The ex-guerrilla who governed Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 was known as the world's "poorest president" because of his modest lifestyle.
Current President Yamandú Orsi announced his predecessor's death on X, writing: "thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people."
The politician's cause of death is not known but he had been suffering from oesophageal cancer.
Because of the simple way he lived as president, his criticism of consumerism and the social reforms he promoted – which, among other things, meant Uruguay became the first country to legalise the recreational use of marijuana – Mujica became a well-known political figure in Latin America and beyond.
His global popularity is unusual for a president of Uruguay, a country with just 3.4 million inhabitants where his legacy has also generated some controversy.
In fact, even though many tended to see Mujica as someone outside the political class, that was not the case.
He said his passion for politics, as well as for books and working the land, was passed on to him by his mother, who raised him in a middle-class home in Montevideo, the capital city.
As a young man, Mujica was a member of the National Party, one of Uruguay's traditional political forces, which later became the centre-right opposition to his government.
In the 1960s, he helped set up the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement (MLN-T), a leftist urban guerrilla group that carried out assaults, kidnappings and executions, although he always maintained that he did not commit any murder.
Influenced by the Cuban revolution and international socialism, the MLN-T launched a campaign of clandestine resistance against the Uruguayan government, which at the time was constitutional and democratic, although the left accused it of being increasingly authoritarian.
During this period, Mujica was captured four times. On one of those occasions, in 1970, he was shot six times and nearly died.
Courteously!

A RARE GEM OF URUGUAY NATION
Humans are called one of the most superior animals on this planet, with organized community life and high moral awareness, with science to decipher human ignorance of nature. But in reality, we humans are the lowest class in terms of humanity. Looking back to the past since humans appeared on Earth, humans still brought suffering to each other through wars for superior religions, superior races, superior languages, superior linguistics, wars for power, wars for Colonialism, passion for prosperity and excessive happiness. But the superior animals walk on two legs, intelligence is still not sublimated, poverty is still there, hopelessness, homelessness still exists and the crazy desire for the dream of Heaven still exists.
I really appreciate the rustic philosophy of living of the late president José Muụica, who just passed away on May 13, 2025, whom I respect from his frugal, non-religious, simple philosophy of living that they call him "The Poorest President in the World".
