Exploring America’s Northernmost City: A Journey to Utqiagvik

Join me as I embark on an unforgettable adventure to Utqiagvik, better known as Barrow, the northernmost city in the United States, nestled deep within the Arctic Circle. This day trip from Anchorage promises breathtaking landscapes and a glimpse into life in one of America’s most remote communities.

The journey begins with an early morning flight aboard a Horizon Air Embraer 175, soaring over stunning vistas, including the majestic Denali. With clear skies framing our arrival, the beauty of Barrow is immediately apparent, setting the stage for an exploration of daily life in this unique locale.

During my nine-hour visit, I had the privilege of exploring Barrow and connecting with its friendly residents. A special thanks to Gus and the local airport team for giving me a behind-the-scenes look at the airport’s operations. From watching passenger flights to witnessing a Boeing 737 freighter deliver essential supplies—like fresh produce—it’s clear how aviation is a lifeline for this community, given the absence of roads connecting Barrow to the rest of Alaska.

After a delightful lunch featuring local flavors, I returned to the airport for my afternoon flight back to Anchorage aboard an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737. Surrounded by breathtaking Arctic scenery, it was the warmth and camaraderie of Barrow’s residents that truly captured my heart.

This adventure was a standout experience, and I can’t wait to return—perhaps in winter—to witness the stark beauty of Barrow in a completely different season. Come along, and let’s discover the wonders of America’s northernmost city together!
