Kevin Costner Told Chris Hemsworth to ‘Wait His Turn’ for Casting

Who would have thought that Chris Hemsworth and Kevin Costner would be vying for the same roles?

The “Thor” alum, 40, and “Yellowstone” star, 69, both were looking to lead an “abstract and interesting” indie romance drama. The unnamed feature will be directed by Costner, who ended up just casting himself in the role.

“There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role],’” Hemsworth told Entertainment Tonight. “I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”

Hemsworth shared that the role is for a “horse wrangler” in the “small story about a man and a woman.” While Hemsworth did not disclose the title of the project, Costner is at work on two films as part of his “Horizon: An American Sagafour-part series. The first will premiere at Cannes, with Warner Bros. debuting the film in theaters on June 28, followed by the second film on August 16. Costner writes, directs, produces, and stars in the films set in the pre- and post-Civil War expansion of the American West. 

Costner also told Entertainment Tonight that the feature Hemsworth attempted to star in is “a love story, but as long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it.”
