Killing time – The science of boredom | DW Documentary
Our modern lives are wired for productivity, speed and constant stimulation. Boredom? No time! Yet boredom can fire up our creativity and help teach us to manage our emotions.
In a world built for productivity, speed and nonstop stimulation, it seems there’s little room left for boredom. Smartphones offer us endless distraction, making it easy to avoid the uncomfortable feeling. But what actually is boredom? And why do we feel it? Everybody experiences boredom, yet few of us take it seriously. Researchers around the world are working to better understand it — because beneath that nagging sense of emptiness lies far more than most people realize.
The documentary is an entertaining exploration of how boredom can be not only unpleasant — but also beneficial. Feeling bored encourages us to look for ways out of dull situations and can help boost our creativity. It also plays an important role in childhood, as we learn to manage our emotions. Researchers do caution against idealizing boredom, though. When it becomes chronic, it can contribute to problems such as alcoholism, and internet and gambling addictions.
We all know boredom — yet we all experience it differently. Is it an agonizing emptiness, or a driving force behind creativity? Nervous restlessness, or restful calm? In fascinating experiments, researchers in psychology, neuroscience and philosophy explore this elusive feeling. How can some people tolerate boredom better than others? How much boredom is healthy — and what actually happens in the brain when nothing is happening? Spoiler: Quite a lot!

My only personal problem in whole life🎉🎉
boredom is often misunderstood as a negative state, but it is a *powerful, necessary pause* in our fast-paced lives. When we stop filling every moment with stimulation, we open a window of opportunity for true mindfulness. This mental space allows the noise of regular tasks to fade, enabling us to reconnect with our true selves and spark the creativity that lies dormant beneath constant busyness. By embracing the stillness of boredom, we aren't wasting time, we are clearing our minds to discover ideas and perspectives that simply cannot surface when our attention is always occupied.
burnout caused by being overchallenged and missing meaning in what we do seems to be kinda similar to boredom… also I wish there was something said about ADHD – doesn't it cause that the people are more easily bored?
Boredom can lead to Brainstorming & Breakthroughs. It's a feature, not a Boring Bug.
I'm not bored. I need unconditional right to stop my own life. That's why they make laws about abortion. Because we don't own our lives. We're workers. Our parents sold us to work 😢
Losing time about something you're not interested in.
I don't want to do anything because I don't want my parents to be proud about me when im very productive.
Does a sloth get bored ? No , don't answer that 😂
this was so fkn boring i swear
"Boredom" is a tricky term. Often what is really meant is anhedonia, anxiety, even a kind of subliminal anger provoking a general malaise. We might do well to avoid speaking of boredom until we've refined our perception of what's really going on with us emotionally. Plain old fear is also a cause of dissatisfaction misidentified as boredom — in today's political and environmental climate.
Only boring people get bored.
Watching from Malawi 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I am a software developer who works from home, uses AI all the time and as a result I've read every tweet, every Reddit thread and watched every YouTube video. You wouldn't believe how bored I am. I have become pathologically disinterested in anything that's going around me. I don't want to read or watch or think. No computer game is exciting me anymore despite playing them for a few decades. I think I'm a true product of our modern society.
