Ladies in Retirement is a captivating 1941 psychological thriller directed by the talented Charles Vidor and featuring a standout performance by Ida Lupino as the troubled housekeeper Ellen Creed. The film deftly explores themes of sacrifice, madness, and moral ambiguity within the confines of a gothic atmosphere.
Set against the backdrop of a decaying country estate, the story unfolds as Ellen Creed, devoted to her eccentric sisters, takes drastic measures to protect them from institutionalization. Her employer, the elderly and domineering Leonora Fiske, played by Isobel Elsom, becomes an unfortunate victim of Ellen’s desperation when Ellen resorts to murder. It’s a chilling act born from a place of twisted loyalty and desperation.
As the plot thickens, the arrival of Ellen’s manipulative nephew, Albert Feather, portrayed by Louis Hayward, sets the stage for tension and intrigue. With strong performances, particularly from Lupino and Hayward, Ladies in Retirement presents a gripping narrative that questions the boundaries of love, duty, and the human psyche. The film remains a significant entry in the genre of psychological thrillers, marking itself as a memorable exploration of the darker aspects of familial ties and human desperation.

Great performance by Ms. Ida Lupino. All movies and TV flicks I watched with Ms Lupino in it is effective to the viewer. I must say that from her early years and throughout her career as actress, writer, producer, director, she is consistently remarkable.
❤❤❤❤THE REMAKE OF THIS MOVIE IS "THE MAD ROOM WITH STELLA STEVENS AS ELLEN IN 1969! A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SCRIPT, HOWEVER SHELLEY WINTERS PLAYS MRS. FISKE ROLE AS MRS. ARMSTRONG, AND THE CHILDREN ARE MANDY AND GEORGE. THE INTERESTING THING IS THAT SHELLEY WINTERS SANG TIT WILLOW IN A MOVIE IN 1971, CALLED 'WHOEVER SLEW AUNTIE ROO?"
Hard to watch with the awful audio.
Thank you for making this movie available
First, I have watched this movie hundreds of times it never gets old. Love Ida’s acting and ease of grace. The sisters are hilarious and so off putting. I believe they are the sane ones😊
This has to be my fav 1940s thriller/noir film, the setting and characters are entertaining
Thank you but too many ads, hard to watch
The sister asked a sister, don't you know we are being watched over?
The nervous sister replied, but I'm not sure by who.
So nice to see ourselves on the silver screen.
This is really an awful depressing movie where a nice old lady is murdered and it isn't amusing. It's just discussing how awful humans can be. Booo. It's just English people being horrible to each other as usual. Boooo
Watching Ida Lupina cross the screen with the delicate poise of a gentle lady combined with the pounce of a black panther is an absolute pleasure.
Her body language and facial expression are entirely next level. What a talent.
Bleak backdrop, balmy birds and a gentleman grifter. I'd Grab of Lucies hand and runaway!
A real example of what we simply call a “Good film”.
Thank you very much for sharing it. 👌
فيلم رائع و محبك لكن حزين جدا، أنا من مصر وأعشق الأفلام القديمة في كل الثقافات
I'm confused. Did Ellen leave for good? Where is she going when she kisses her two sisters goodbye. On the other hand, the two supposedly unbalanced and crazy sisters are the normal ones. They're brutally honest, caring, and logical.
Ida Lupino was a fantastic director, she directed many of the episodes of Boris Karloff’s “ Thriller” series..A very talented woman.
Ellen is just as crazy as her sisters.

If anyone has ever seen the episode of Gilligan's Island where the broadway producer arrived on the island and the castaways put on an operas/play. Ida Lupino directed that episode. It taught me how to be fiscally responsible.
Evelyn Keyes really does have a resemblance in vibe to Jodie Comer, especially the expressive eyes, classic blonde beauty, and that ability to shift between sweetness and intensity on screen.
Ida Lupino and Louis Hayward were married from 1938-1945.
A remarkable woman Ida Lupino was. In a man's world for 50 years was a quality actress, director, writer, and producer. Throughout her 50-year career, she appeared in 59 films and directed eight, working primarily in the United States, where she became a citizen in 1948. She should get more recognition for her body of work and her contribution to the industry she gave 100% to!
I'll watch anything with Ida starring… I've seen this movie a few times, but never such a nice, clean copy as this. Thanks for this one *Stream City*, much appreciated.
