I’ve watched a lot of these movies from this era, and now understand why the theme of false accusations and innocent people getting convicted are so common. So many police forces were poorly trained, forensic science was still in its infancy, and corruption and incredible pressures towards quick judgment was the rule. Henry Wade of Texas (1951-87) is one example, with dozens of convictions eventually overturned. If it wasn’t outright corruption and influence peddling towards conviction, many police would act as judge and jury. A little bit of circumstantial evidence could easily lead to “you are guilty, so it’s no big deal if I plant evidence to help convict you…” and then I can move onto the next case (oh, and thanks for the promotion)…
Fantastic film that punches way above its weight class! Amazing performances by the leads. Fonda's fall from unshakable believer in the system to dark, disillusioned victim displays acting chops that presage his rise to stardom. Maureen O'Sullivan's journey along the same path, with her embracing her own power to save all she loves is riveting and heart-wrenching, even in the face of triumph. Thanks for posting this amazing film!
When the foreman of the Jury says "Well, the customary thing is to take a poll right now, to see where we all stand" – that's a little future echo for Fonda to carry forward 18 years to the classic '12 Angry Men'. What a great, deep actor he was. I was smitten with Maureen O'Sullivan since I was 14 and saw her playing 'Jane' opposite Johnny Weissmuller's 'Tarzan' on TV repeats. She was Irish (although her accent was more Engl-ish than Ir-ish in this film!) and quite breathtakingly beautiful.
Maureen O'Sullivan is so goddamn awful in this!
Hi
QUEEN OF HEAVEN WORSHIP IS IDOLATRY. IT’S NOT THE JEWISH MOTHER OF JESUS, WHO ACKNOWLEDGED HER NEED OF A SAVIOUR, AS A SINNER!😮
Muy buen filme. Yo lo desconocía. Gracias por rescatarlo y mostrárnoslo.
What a doll she is. And him too. Great actors. Again what a voice. ISNT IT AMAZING how we all have unique voice.
Propoganda from this film:
FHA is for everyone,
Mr BedLow shows up Everywhere
Second movie that Henry Fonda got nailed in!
32:29 😆😅 just realized Henry Fonda has been here before. 1957
They got out of jail wouldn shake hands or even smile at getting out.. Some people ar never happy… I'm glad no injustice like that happens these days..
Putting your fate in the hands of 12 mouth breathers too stupid to get out of jury duty. Good luck.
A great movie ruined by advertisements, Henry Fonda was a great great actor Maureen O’Sullivan as well I miss movies like this simple clean clear
The more things change,
the more they stay the same.
1/28/25.
❤ Luigi for PRESIDENT NOW ❤
Good story, more than that, a great film, and because of Henry Fonda.
Who wouldn't dream to have him as father, brother, friend, lover, husband, boss, or president of the United States. He was all a man desires to be and wants to cherish, love, admire… and he was beautiful too.
😘❤😘❤😘❤
tHANK YOU; I didn't know this film.
Film Nov. 1938-Jan. 1939. 18 years before The Wrong Man and 19 before 12 Angry Men. This was based on a true story in Massachusetts
Great movie
Very Powerful movie, it was great! Henery Fonda was the best actor for this role. Love it! 😊
A “Happy Ending” that leaves the viewer feeling entirely empty and bereft. 😢 beautiful
Excellent movie!
What an incredibly great film that was so interesting.Henry Fonda and Mareen Osullivan Great, great story.Great acting thank you very much
Nothing has changed in the US. They should have a judicial system like Switzerland.
And my job is to get convictions — just like Harris in CA.
This movie was in 1939. In 1956 Fonda starred in "The Wrong Man", again being accused of a crime with which he had nothing to do. And to me he always looked to be so very innocent.
Interesting contrast here. Henry Fonda plays an Innocent man found guilty in this movie, and 18 years later he will play a juror in a murder case (12 Angry Men) that has doubts about the suspect's guilt and eventually gets the rest of the jury to see his way.
it is very sad to convict innocents just because someone shouts it is him or her without any solid evidence
The mental torture of being accused of a crime you did not commit or of being held hostage without knowing if you would be killed is surely beyond comprehension to those who have not experienced it. Kudos and blessing to the Israeli hostages and to the January 6th detainees now released, finally, by President Trump!
“I can’t say that I blame him” Ya think?!?! Wonder how many innocent people have been put to death…Probably more often than we think.
Good movie. Great actors. Thanks.
and yet he was a staunch democrat even after this movie
just cannot handle innocent ppl getting railroaded…. can't watch
Thank you
Absolutely great movie, great acting, great camerawork – wow! Hard to decide what my favorite Henry Fonda movie is, since I've still got some fifty to go before I can give a fair ranking, but this one surely hit the mark! Thanks for uploading 👍
Big Problems with the case…the actual crooks stole a Brand New Cab. And the witness clearly saw it. Since shots were fired and a safe was blown open, there were no tests for any kind of gunpowder or explosive residue. No search was conducted for the stolen brand new cab. The stolen cab would've been found along with evidence and fingerprints of the perpetrators. Henry and his friend didn't have any guns or the stolen money. His actual cab would've had traces /evidence of the crime.
Things don't change much do they ?
As evidence, eye witness accounts are down there with hearsay. Useless. Also, people think a jury deciding on a verdict is some kind of scientific proof. There has to be a way of double-checking a jury's decision.
Young Henry Fonda was so natural, such a good actor 🙆
He got famous lines, just like those in this movie, about justice and "the little people".
His lines were never só true in America 🤦
I would have loved to have lived back then.
As we've witnessed recently, all too easy to convict and sentence the easy targets.
Thanks great move 🎉 👍
We've come a long way baby! Now the murderers are pardoned, criminals are released; many with no bail. ie. the criminal that passed away from a choke hold in the NY subway who had criminal charges against him and was stilled allowed out on bail while the hero who kept him from harming innocent civilians went to jail.
M I blind ? This is not Maureens face or voice 😐?? What goes on here ? She couldn't have changed that much ?? Fonda has bn gorgeous his entire life. Fine chiseled features just don't change with age. Thats why his kids wer beautiful. Terrific actor ❤
