In a recent incident highlighting ongoing concerns over taxi fares at Cancun International Airport, two American tourists were charged $500 USD for a ride to Tulum, a journey of approximately 74 miles. The fare included an additional fee of 2,500 pesos for stopping at two convenience stores, and the driver insisted on upfront cash payment, citing a lack of internet access for card transactions.
In response to this and similar occurrences, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has initiated efforts to regulate transportation fees at the airport. Emphasizing the importance of tourism to the region’s economy, Governor Lezama stated, “We cannot allow a few to affect the work of everyone… all excessive charges hurt the destinations.” She is collaborating with the federal government to address these issues and improve Cancun’s image among visitors.
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) in Quintana Roo has urged travelers to select airport taxis and transportation services with clearly visible rates to avoid falling victim to price gouging.
Israel Malacón Osuna, head of Profeco in Quintana Roo, is encouraging visitors to opt for transportation companies that are “accredited providers” operating within the airport. He also advised travelers to book rides in advance through online platforms to prevent complications and unexpected charges.
“It is essential to verify that the providers are real, are duly accredited, and have registration with the tax authorities,” Osuna stated, emphasizing the importance of using reputable services.
The previously mentioned incident is not isolated; previous reports include a Canadian traveler who was charged $1,000 USD for a taxi ride, during which the driver attempted to leave with the passenger’s bag. Such cases have prompted authorities to seek solutions that balance fair pricing with the need to maintain a positive experience for tourists.
