Luigi Mangione enters a plea of not guilty in murder case involving UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally gunning down health insurance executive Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street, has pleaded not guilty to New York state murder charges. The 26-year-old was escorted into Judge Gregory Carro’s courtroom in the New York State criminal courthouse in lower Manhattan where he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, requested immediate, expedited discovery in the case, with the judge agreeing to the request. Agnifilo emphasized that Mangione is entitled to a presumption of innocence like every other defendant, raising concerns over the violation of his rights in how the case has been handled so far.

New York Prosecutor Joel Seidemann commented on the high volume of evidence in the case, stating that he had never seen a case with such an amount of evidence before, raising questions about the quality of the evidence presented. The trial is set to proceed with further developments expected in the coming days.
