Mega-wedding of heir to Asia’s richest man highlights India’s unequal society

The opulent wedding of Anant Ambani, the son of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, has captured the attention of the world as it comes to an end in Mumbai. The extravagant affair, lasting for four days, is a celebration of the union between Anant and Radhika Merchant.

Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, is ranked as the 11th richest person in the world with a fortune exceeding $123 billion. He is a key supporter of India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The guest list for the wedding includes a plethora of Indian and international celebrities, such as former British Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Tony Blair, former United States Secretary of State John Kerry, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt.

Notably, pop superstars Rihanna and Justin Bieber performed for the guests during the pre-wedding festivities, adding to the grandeur of the event.

The extravagant nature of the wedding has sparked a conversation about India’s unequal society, where the wealth gap between the elite and the majority of the population remains stark. The lavish celebrations serve as a stark reminder of the disparities that exist within Indian society.
