As Hungary takes on the presidency of the European Union, controversy and criticism have surrounded the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The European Parliament has not been shy in voicing their concerns, with many MEPs challenging Orban on his alleged infringement upon ‘European values’.
One of the main issues at hand is Hungary’s controversial new anti-LGBTQ+ law, which has been met with backlash from across the EU. Critics argue that the law not only discriminates against the LGBTQ+ community but also goes against the fundamental values of the European Union, such as equality and non-discrimination.
In a recent session, MEPs were quick to question Orban on his government’s actions, with some even calling for Hungary to be stripped of its EU presidency. The heated debate highlighted the deep divide within the EU on issues of human rights and democracy.
Orban, known for his authoritarian tendencies, has long been a thorn in the side of the EU, with his government’s attacks on the judiciary, media freedom, and civil society drawing widespread criticism. Many fear that under his leadership, Hungary’s presidency will further damage the reputation of the EU and undermine its core values.
With tensions rising, it remains to be seen how the EU will navigate this challenging presidency and address the growing concerns over Hungary’s adherence to European values. As the debates continue, the future of the EU and its commitment to human rights and democracy hangs in the balance.

If EU is very much against Viktor Orban, why don't you just abandon Hungary altogether? It was a communist state in the USSR era.

Back in the 1990s to 2010 there had been some hope that Hungary would join the EU "Democracies" , but that evidently will not be the case.
But perhaps "democracy" is not ment for everyone. They have vanished from the list of countries The Economist gathers and displays.

Orban should join BRICS.
Orban did indeed say he wishes that the EU is disassembled, so his mouthpiece is incorrect when he denies it is Hungary’s intention to white ant Europe’s Union.

Is von der Leyen 'controversial'?
The Hungarian MEP nailed the important point on immigration and asylum that Syrian and other people seeking safety must seek it in the first safe country not the country of their choice or the country that pays the most. Why this is not enforced and supported fully and openly is the heart of the immigration/asylum/human trafficking issue in all of the EU and elsewhere. The first safe country is also much more likely to have similar language and culture to the immigrant or asylum seeker so as to ease the transition difficulty for them and any community they settle into.
Yeah like the Minsk agreement
