In a surprising turn of events, Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed to lead the country’s interim government following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina’s departure comes in the midst of a mass uprising against her rule, primarily fueled by student activists.
The announcement of Yunus’s new role was made by Joynal Abedin, the press secretary of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, early on Wednesday. This decision marks a significant shift in leadership for the country during a period of intense political turmoil.
Mushfiqul Fazal, Executive Editor of South Asia Perspectives, provided insight into this development during a live interview with Al Jazeera from Washington DC. Fazal’s perspective shed light on the implications of Yunus taking the helm of Bangladesh’s interim government and the challenges that lie ahead.
Yunus, known for his groundbreaking work in microfinance and poverty alleviation, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. His appointment signals a potential new direction for Bangladesh as it navigates through a period of political crisis and social unrest.
As the country transitions under Yunus’s leadership, all eyes will be on how he tackles the challenges at hand and steers Bangladesh towards a more stable and prosperous future. The involvement of such a respected figure like Yunus in the political landscape is sure to bring hope and optimism to many in the country.

I'm so excited about the positive change, especially with someone who has a conscience and embodies the greater good.
Professor Yunus needs to understand, his first name is Muhammad, the name of the greatest leader of all time. And similarly, he is called upon to be the greatest leader of his time. I pray that he answers that call and runs the country as Prime Minister permanently, not just during the interim government.
I feel proud of my country when I see yunus as the prime minister
