Gunmen carried out a series of deadly attacks on churches, a synagogue, and a police post in Russia’s Dagestan region, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of at least 15 police and National Guard officers, several civilians, and an Orthodox priest. The attackers, six in total, also lost their lives in the violence that unfolded in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala on Sunday.
The attacks coincided with the festival of Pentecost for the Russian Orthodox Church, further underscoring the severity of the situation. Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, was also targeted in the onslaught, with several places of worship coming under attack and a police post falling victim as well. The incidents have reignited concerns about religious violence in Dagestan, a region with a history of such unrest.
