My Strange Connection with Chris McCandless | Into the Wild
In this captivating video, join Gabriel Morris as he shares his unique and personal journey that intertwines with the legendary tale of Chris McCandless, the protagonist of “Into the Wild.” Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Alaska, Gabriel recounts his departure from the University of Alaska in Juneau in May 1992. In a twist of fate, he embarks on a journey that brings him tantalizingly close to Chris’s own path just a week after McCandless ventured into the Alaskan wilderness.
Gabriel’s narrative unfolds as he hops on a ferry to Haines, hitches a ride north into Canada, and eventually crosses back into Alaska. While many know McCandless’s story as one of adventure and tragedy, Gabriel offers a personal perspective, reflecting on the shared experiences of two souls seeking the freedom of the wild.
Throughout the video, viewers will be treated to stunning visuals of Denali National Park, with music that beautifully complements the enchanting scenery. The soundscape includes “Desert Blues” by Don Syke and “Lingering Waterdrop” by Per-Anders Nilsson, enhancing the emotional depth of Gabriel’s reflections.
As a seasoned budget traveler and author, Gabriel not only shares his adventures but invites viewers to explore their own connections to nature, freedom, and self-discovery. Whether you’re a fan of McCandless’s story or simply love travel tales, this video promises a poignant exploration of how our paths can intersect, even in the vast silence of the wilderness.
Join Gabriel on this introspective journey, and perhaps find a piece of your own story reflected in the wild. Don’t forget to support his adventures on Patreon or check out his books for even more travel inspiration!

Gabe, I have a book by Krakauer on my book shelf. It's called: Into Thin Air. That was a great read! But it sounds like he also wrote for Outside magazine and wrote an article there, about Mccandless.
Hi Gabriel, keep on trucking ❤❤
Hi Gabe, this was a pretty interesting story. Do you have a link to you're personal writings?
Fantastic place!
Some of those trees looked burned behind you.
❤👍🇨🇦
Every solo traveler connect to Chris Mc Candless at any point in their lives.
Same as every writer connect to Shakespeare in their any undertaking or beyond.
I have been in Yosemite during a study/vacation abroad, some years ago, and I found it incredibly beautiful. We did a 3-day tour seeing a lot of POI. You can really feel you're into the wild!!
I paralleled both of you for the first few years before returning to civilization, your life is more inspiring as balanced adventure and staying alive..
into the arms of America!!🇺🇲🙏⏳😊
48:00 $75
That seems to be more expensive than in Alaska, Iceland, or Switzerland.
That's very eerie, you could have easily crossed paths with Chris on your travels. Every time I saw a black burnt out stump while you were walking I thought it was a BEAR!!! LOL…
Yosemite NP is so beautiful. I visited there back in 2009 on my first visit to the USA. Even stayed a night in Sonora ha! Very pretty town. I didn’t really know much about Chris McCandless, quite a sad story. Thank you for a very moving and beautiful hike through the forest of Yosemite NP. ❤
💚💚💚
Hi Gabriel, Yosemite is magnificent beyond words can express, breathtaking regardless of how many times you've seen it. It is nature at its finest, nature's monument. The story of Chris McCandless is horrific. I can imagine what he must have been going through those last few days and weeks before his death; the suffering must have been incredible. They say the group Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" album cover predicted 9/11 when you look at the album cover in the mirror, reversed shows 9/11 over the twin towers.
Yosemite is a 3 hour drive for me.
Not too crowded if you avoid the valley.
Hey Gabriel great video as always, would love to visit California one day. We also crossed paths this May at Monemvasia Greece as I was there with my wife same dates as you. Unfortunately we did not see you would have been very interesting to talk to you about your travels.
Thank you, Gabriel 😊❤
It is funny you say most incredible feat in human history, Free Solo, that is how I felt. Me and a buddy saw it in the theater when it came out, I have been into sports my whole life, played college sports, coached etc….I came out of there thinking it was the most incredible physical/technical/mental accomplishment in American history or maybe world history. For two days I was dumbfounded. And the fact it was not really at the forefront (at least it seemed that way) blew my mind. I personally do not think the feat gets enough credit. Glad it is on film.
That area is incredibly beautiful 🏕best place for camping and hiking 🤗Thanks for sharing and take care 👍😎
Hey Gabriel, you're a couple hours east of me. I love the Sierra Nevadas. I'm driving through on my way to Folsom next weekend. It takes over an hour longer than taking Hwy 80 to 50, but a lot more beautiful drive.
Always 2 things come to mind re Chris' story…
1 > the quote "it's no measure of health to be well adjusted to a sick Society" Krishnamurti
&
2 > Eddie Vedder's 1st Solo Soundtrack which was for the movie
