In “Neurodiversity and the Liberal Arts: Living at the Crossroad,” Connor Farquhar explores the intersection of neurodiversity and the liberal arts, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and diverse perspectives in education. Farquhar argues that traditional educational models often overlook the unique strengths and needs of neurodiverse individuals. He advocates for a paradigm shift that embraces neurodiversity as an asset, particularly within liberal arts disciplines that thrive on creativity and critical thinking. Through personal anecdotes and insightful observations, he illustrates how neurodiverse individuals can enrich academic discourse and foster innovation. By re-evaluating our understanding of intelligence and creativity, Farquhar calls for a more inclusive approach to education, one that recognizes the value of various cognitive styles and encourages collaboration among students of all backgrounds. This thought-provoking talk challenges viewers to reconsider the roles of neurodiverse individuals in society and the arts, ultimately promoting a richer, more diverse cultural landscape.

Author Video Description

Just as the liberal arts teach us to analyze and understand the human experience, neurodiversity defines the manner in which we view the world. This talk explores how the liberal arts colleges are uniquely suited to support neurodiverse students, and how the efforts we make to nurture these voices improve the institution (as a whole/at large). Connor Farquhar is a senior Biophysics major at Amherst College. His interests are quite diverse, including linguistics, border politics, and microbiology. As a neurodiverse student, he believes that diversity of mind is an integral part of learning and innovation, and is thus key to improving the world. As such, through his speech, he hopes to provoke reflection on the role of neurodiversity in the liberal arts and education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
