In recent years, there has been a push for the repatriation of stolen bronzes from the Kingdom of Benin back to Nigeria. While this effort has been appreciated by today’s Benin Bronze casters, they have expressed concerns about the lack of support and investment from the Nigerian government. Currently, there are only 40 Benin Bronze craftsmen left in the country, and they fear that without proper support, this traditional art form may disappear within the next few decades.
The return of stolen bronzes from Europe and the United States has been a positive step towards preserving the cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Benin. However, the Benin Bronze makers are facing challenges such as a lack of funding, resources, and recognition from their own government. Without the necessary support, these artisans may not be able to continue their craft and pass it down to future generations.
The Benin Bronze makers are calling on the Nigerian government to invest in training programs, workshops, and initiatives that will support and promote their art form. They believe that with the right resources and opportunities, they can not only preserve the tradition of Benin Bronze casting but also revitalize and grow the industry for years to come.
As the world continues to acknowledge the importance of preserving cultural heritage and returning stolen artifacts, it is crucial for countries like Nigeria to prioritize the support and protection of their indigenous art forms. The dwindling number of Benin Bronze makers serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to ensure the survival and flourishing of this unique and historically significant craft.

I’m a serious buyer and would really love the information on how to contact these people because there’s a lot of business that can be had. If I’m able to get the information I have interior designers that also are interested in these artists please business insider if you could put any contact information in order for us to be able to keep this art technique alive because I doubt I’m the only person who’s willing and wanting to purchase these bronze masterpieces. I’ll be checking this comment because I’m really hoping to find out how to reach these Nigerian artisans. And it would definitely be in business insiders best interest to provide that information. Otherwise it feels like these videos are just exploiting the struggles and death of different arts and dying techniques without providing anyway for your almost 10,000,000 follower audience to be able to reverse the issue and, allow for commerce between the audience and the artisans that are featured.
There are so many things sad about the story of stolen bronzes.
One, some of them are now in private collections and will probably never be returned to the public.
Two, most of those that are owned by public institution, like museums, would not be on display, they are in different levels of storage, out of public eye and only accessible by historians.
Three, those that are displayed, are perhaps not as appreciated as they would have been if they were in Benin. When I was in British Museum there was barely anyone in the room where the most famous exhibit (the series of bronze depicting the history of Benin) of them was displayed.
Finally, British Museum itself admits that the bronzes were looted by the soldiers (I made sure to check this, the website literally uses the word "looted") but stubbornly refuses to give them back. Just think about that. If you will steal anything and the fact of that would be exposed, you would be forced to return the item in question and then would stand trial, but if it's a government institution that stole something they can hold on to because reasons.
Sigh
Why do they call it bronze when i take old taps to the scrap dealer and get paid for brass?
Of course the original bronzes were trophies of the castration and trading of slaves mostly sent to the Arab empire
Anyone knows how to buy their work directly in Europe?
Such traditions and culture is one of humanities most beautiful things.
it would be nice to post up an email or something to connect with the uncles
The new museum should be funded by the British and other foreign museums that have profited from displaying the stolen goods
Seems like the best way going forward would be for foreign museums and collectors to return the stolen ones and buy new ones made by today's artisans to replace them. Everybody wins that way.
Shame on the government of Edo
Can they make a bronze Sculpture of king Charles
Can they make a bronze tea cup
Not only the bronzes were stolen…once it was known that Benin had amazing artisans casting bronze, some of the artisans themselves were taken to America to work as chattel slaves.
When DeSantis said that slaves learned crafts, he was ignorant of the fact that slavers were told what skills were needed and where to find the people. From those who knew how to farm rice, to those who crafted boats for shallow waters and rivers, to Benin bronze artists, it was no accident that people with skills were targeted.
"So that it does not die in our hands"
Deep.
Also typical, oh why doesn't the government give us all money! We sell for nothing only for someone else to sell for lots! We can't sell for lots ourselves, government give us money now!
The return of the german statues was a fiasco. Germany built a museum in Nigeria for these returned statues. Unfortunately, these were not exhibited to the public as promised, but were handed over to the descendant of the original owner. A rich, african ruler and slave trader. Incidentally, most of the bronze from these old statues comes from europe. It was used to pay the local african slave traders.
Now the bronze, bought with slaves, is finally back with its "rightful owner": the descendant of a slave trader.
It’s about time to return every looted artefact to Benin. The UN should commission Benin’s artists of today to create replacements for artefact holders around the world, so that the people of Benin can get their stolen heritage back, the museum goers around the world can continue seeing such artefacts, and the local artist can thrive, not just survive.
it would be a great thing if they gave the bronzes back, and then commissioned the craftsmen to make new ones/replicas
Ohh beautiful works sad that they are not willing to be returned as fast, and the government won’t support the artisans That make them
Do they have a website or online store? That'd be the best way to sell to an international audience
That’s brass not bronze….
Benin is foolish to not promote this. I keep saying, countries don't value artists, but the people who sell the countries are the artists. Do you know how valuable Rihanna made Barbados, what Bob Marley and all the dancehall artists did for Jamaica? Etc etc… What all of the Geishas and Calligraphers did for japan? What the artwork of ancient egypt did for the respect of that country? It was an artist (Shephard Fairey) that made Obama go viral. Stop sleeping on art. Their contributions are important
Benin City is my city ❤
Homosexual
The best part is that they are recycling those old parts into art. 🎉
Where is the proof anything was stolen and not sold?
What if the crafters recreated the stolen bronze and sell it to the countries who have them. They could make money and get the originals back.
Stolen returned bronzes? Get a clue, you have a fraud effort. Encouraging people to recreate and return fakes will cost you in the end, and water down the trade artifacts with rip offs, fakes, and recreations. Please never accept a return, its fraudulent.
Give them their artifacts back
every Nation had its turning point! the evil British Empire.
It is similar to Dokra or Dhokra bronze art of India
Wonderful creations. Keep up the great work. It is the earth's heritage which must be preserved.
beautiful statues, I really hope the craft will stay alive for years to come. I'll try to spread the word about these beautiful pieces of art.
My heart goes out for fellow casters and foundry workers as someone who has nearly 5 years experience of my own. Some day I wish to see this shop for myself after having read about the bronzes prior to this video.
So basically afrcia and india are the same country
Ur ancestors took this knowledge from India and China
15th and 18th isnt even anciemt this is coped from dhorka cows and is a technique used in china 5000 years ago. Boo woo . U sculptured a chicken . Wow
😅
Just coped from other people and show off cos you think your great
And you know what. If the whyte man didnt steal it due to what was going on naturally no king or anything would have preserved that. Abdool from somali would think you are kuffir and melt all the statues. Atleast the whyte man said wow . And put it in a museum
British and American "gunboat diplomacy " The more things change the more they stay the same!
I need to go visit this guild someday. Usually, when you think of a UNESCO Heritage Site, you think of a ruin that no one uses anymore, but it makes a lot of sense for a place like that with such an important craft to be a Heritage Site as well.
Ah… lost culture, stolen artifacts and the Bri*tish
Fantastic vid!💯👍
In India some of the sculptures made by the same way
Just ask the German government, since the still current powerfull German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, was the architect of this royal national treasure (stolen by German colonialists in the 19th century in Benin and kept in Germany as spoil) being handed over to president Bola Tinubu's Nigeria (in exchange for no-Russian Nigerian oil and gas needed in Berlin and Europe) in this manner fraudulent for the Beninese people and authorities, as the latest European neocolonialist grievance against this small African country.
Anyone else hear Jamaican jams in the background? ❤ much love for the most important artists humanity has to offer
One wealthy american could make sure that those craftsmen are comfortable and their familiesare well fed and happy for their entire lives while they preserve that culture in its absolutely stunning beauty. But they want lamborghini yachts
But did you reach out to the European museums holding onto the Bronze pieces that were looted and ask when they'll return them?
Coming soon to a British museum.
I once went to Benin city in search of artifacts for a patron of mine.
you wouldn't believe the treasures I found in the scrap piles.
some of these workshops are melting down ancient treasures to make their own new stuff. They had no concept of the value of the items.
My client was ecstatic at the stuff I found and brought. I was buying artifacts by the Kilo for scrap value.
9:28 No, you were, "being d!sturbed" because for thousands of years you sent m!llions into sl4very, those were the spirits of the ancestors d!sturbing you.
UK is a scumbag country
When he talks about what made his ancestors come up with this, it makes me think of the question of who was the first person who thought cows milk was drinkable and a good idea haha.
