President Biden, along with leaders from around the world, paid tribute to the heroes of D-Day on the 80th anniversary of the historic invasion that changed the course of World War II. Despite the challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic, less than 200 World War II veterans were able to make the journey to commemorate their fallen comrades.
The solemn ceremony took place at the American cemetery in Normandy, France, where 9,387 U.S. servicemen are laid to rest. President Biden and First Lady Jill were joined by dignitaries such as King Charles, Prince William, and Hollywood legends Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who have played a vital role in preserving the memory of D-Day through their film work.
As the world remembered the courage and sacrifice of those who fought on the beaches of Normandy on that fateful day in 1944, President Biden emphasized the enduring legacy of the Greatest Generation and the importance of honoring their memory. The bonds of friendship and cooperation formed on D-Day continue to unite nations in the pursuit of peace and freedom, exemplifying the true spirit of sacrifice and heroism.
