South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol faced backlash from protestors in Seoul after declaring martial law in response to escalating tensions. The decision sparked outrage, with citizens taking to the streets to demonstrate against the authoritarian measure.
Lawmakers swiftly intervened, voting to block the martial law order and prompting President Yoon Suk Yeol to rescind the decree. The reversal came as a relief to many South Koreans who feared the implications of martial law on their civil liberties.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between security and democracy in South Korea, a country with a history of political unrest and military rule. The swift response from lawmakers and the public’s active participation in the democratic process further demonstrates the strength of South Korea’s democratic institutions.
The events in Seoul serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and the power of collective action in safeguarding civil rights. President Yoon Suk Yeol’s decision to rescind the martial law order showcases the resilience of South Korea’s democracy in the face of authoritarian threats.

Another bad look on South Korea’s short history of presidents.
COMBAT IN KOREA PAST & TODAY ??
UN soldiers fought and were forced to retreat
Behind sandbags protected by barbwire hoops.
Many GI's died as they held off attacks
By 810, 000 Communist troops.
Our guys used phosphorus, flame-throwers and napalm
For without these weapons they could not survive.
The Communist charges led by buglers
Till the UN could start its offensive drive.
On the battlefield of death and misery
Many froze with their hands still stuck to their guns.
While others hobbled with their boots wrapped in rags
City boys, farmers, students, fathers and sons.
With a million and a half dead or wounded
Both sides singed a truce before generals involved.
July 27th, 1953
And though thousands were orphaned, nothing was solved.

History will call this The Trump Effect or The MAGA Effect, yet to be determined, an emulation of peace, freedom and enlightenment
What happened in South Korea today can be described like this: Yeltsin issued Decree 1400, but after several hours of protests near the House of Soviets, he repealed it
The United States has roughly two months left to head in a direction similar to the political situation South Korea faced two years ago. During the pandemic, South Koreans prioritized the economy over democracy in their voting decisions. Now, the current president is on the verge of being forced to resign just 2.5 years into his 5-year term due to his incompetence and autocratic behavior in governing the country.
What a stupid move
Seems like a failed coup to me.
Donald Dump should take note … FA & FO.
Western MSM disinformation. It was the Korean parliament that blocked the illegal power grab. He did not recind it.
We were stationed right in that landing path at Kimpo in '69….It was torture for us to see those Northwest Orient red-tails coming and going back in forth to the world..
Shortest martial law in history…. maybe the president had too much of soju..😂😂😂😂
Sic Semper Tyrannis!
S. Korea has much bigger issues than martial law. Their economy is faltering, and they have the lowest birth rate in the world. Seoul is THE most expensive city to live in the entire world (more than NYC, Paris, or London!). The average apartment in Seoul costs a frickin' $1 million (US)! I don't envy whoever wants to be next president.
Yoon Suk Yeol ate and left no crumbs
Let's see what America does when Trump tries to pull this
recently the anti-peace movement are really hurting the world peace !
Democracy & Freedom have to win !
And to think, this all started because of a simple disagreement over the budget.
President Biden slept through the whole thing.
So my question really is, was the military going to actually enforce this order against its own people? That to me is the scariest part
He declared an abnormal and illegal martial law. This is very stupid behavior.
Koreans do not sit idly by and watch what goes wrong. All involved will be punished.
This is what's going to happen in a couple of months in America.
'January 6'?
well that was short lived.. thought that lil Pesident..(or should i say wannabe Tyrant)wouldve stood 10 toes down for longer
Well that was fast!
Trump told him to stand down!
January 6th, ROK style.
What a 🤡 up night in South Korea
Nowhere no president should have so much power ! Its Scary!im happy for the people! And im happy the army didnt use violence at the gothered people!
South Korea president wakes up today "Did I enforce marshal law or just dream it?…..Oh crap!"
