As wildfires continue to ravage California, a crucial but often overlooked group of firefighters are on the front lines battling the blazes for minimal pay. These firefighters are not your typical first responders, they are incarcerated individuals who are paid less than $2 an hour for their dangerous work.
With around 1,600 incarcerated individuals working as firefighters in California, they make up as much as 15% of the state fire fighting force, known as Cal Fire. The Wall Street Journal’s Ben C. Solomon recently joined one crew of incarcerated firefighters on the Los Angeles fire line as they battled the main fire in the Pacific Palisades. This crew showcased the critical role these individuals play in protecting communities and expensive homes from being consumed by the flames.
In addition to their vital firefighting duties, these incarcerated individuals also play a role in preventing future fires. They work on various conservation projects such as clearing brush and vegetation to reduce the risk of wildfires spreading. Their hard work and dedication are instrumental in safeguarding communities from the devastating impact of wildfires.
For many of these incarcerated firefighters, their work is not just about fighting fires, but also about redemption. Many individuals view their time on the fire lines as an opportunity to give back to society and make amends for their past mistakes. By putting their lives on the line to protect others, these individuals are able to find a sense of purpose and meaning in their work.
As California continues to face the threat of wildfires, these incarcerated firefighters will remain an indispensable part of the state’s firefighting efforts. Despite the challenges they face and the minimal pay they receive, these individuals continue to bravely serve their communities and contribute to the greater good.

3:00….. imagine if it was summer working in 90-100+heat for $1 pr day. I respect these dudes to the fullest.
Yeah, human rights out of the window when it comes to convicts yet keep lecturing the rest of the world.
Slave labor, forced labor and violations of human rights right here 😂
Where’s the Human Rights Watch org?
I cant believe anyone would complain about them working for $2. They have all housing, clothing, health, even education. They are getting trained on a job! Get over yourself! they are incarcerated for a reason!
these Prisoners have done horrible things to people and communities they come from, they shouldn't get a dollar the money should go to the victims. Now move on to a real issue
I hope, that they all stay safe!
They all did something wrong in the past,
& they are working hard to make up for it!
Good luck to all of them in the future!
Time off a sentence 🤔 priceless 😊
This is some form of forced labor is it?
send more money to ukraine
This is what kamala did when she was attorney general in California.
Thank you, guys! ❤
Everyone deserves a chance. Good for those guys!
Are they russian Wagner??
"The prisoners can contribute back to society"
That's nice and all, but the issue here is the perverse incentive. If you can pay a prisoner $2 an hour, and that is, quote "a major source of labor" for the State of California, then your economy starts relying on that slave labor. What happens when your prison population starts declining? That should be a positive thing, but now, you're taking an economic hit, and now fewer criminals is a bad thing, and sometimes, the solution is to start criminalizing normal behaviour.
You want prisoners to repay their debts? Fine. But pay them the normal rate for their work.
I love this. But I think they should be paid a little bit more. Maybe $5. I also think these prisoners could be used to clean up trashy cities. It cost taxpayers millions to keep these people in jail when they could be used to help our planet.
Talk about paying back to society
Abuse the Gold Standard the Only Standard.
Suddenly right wing yellow journalism mogul Rupert Murdoch’s WSJ cares about the plight of convict firefighters? Progressive Amy Goodman covered this on DemocracyNow! more intimately with more empathy YEARS AGO.
Remember also the people of Gaza. USA funded and supported Israel to Genocide and to destroy Gaza homes, murdered women, children, and men, and destroyed schools, hospitals and life infrastructures.

Why not invite army???😂😂😂😂 is army keep for only saving Tel Aviv???
Redemption or exploitation?
They're from Canada firefighters some from Mexico too.
At least my tax dollars is going to some good use.
Maybe they shouldn’t have fired people for rejecting the clot shot!
I know white males are turned down applying for these jobs. These fires are a prime example of woke DEI diversity. Elections have consequences!
Yeah and if they loose a couple no great loss… right
clown world
2 dollars in justifiable since when you are in prison you get a place to sleep and food for free.
So what? They are prisoners and should feel lucky to get out of prison and help their community. Why does the agenda driven media care so much about this? They shouldn’t get paid at all as they have a massive debt to society and cost us taxpayers $60k per year to house and feed.
Perhaps those prisoners should consider this an opportunity to get on the right side of things and learn to be productive citizens. It should not be about the money. The crimes committed and high costs of incarcerating criminals apparently are not being considered. I truly appreciate those prisoners who are trying to make themselves and communities they are helping better. This is a typical left wing approach to everything – throw money at it. Doing what the prisoners are doing is giving them more than money could ever do. It is making them good citizens, more self-confident, better educated and better prepared to face the world once they are out of prison. The time spent inside and the work they are doing is their payment for earlier missteps. Good for them! I see comments to this effect below from folks who have "been there."
I hope they can get certification and can be trained and absorbed into the station.
That’s absurd! $5-$8 atleast! They’re still citizens and they’re putting their life on the line
One thing I notice that the prisoners who volunteer for firefighters are not the worse of the worse like murderers and rapist. They're usually guys who can be reformed and learn some actual real world skills. So the $2 is a great deal to redeem themselves and get out out of prison early.
