In the sparsely-populated communities around the Okavango Delta, education is a crucial tool for shaping the future of the region. However, these communities often face challenges in recruiting trained teachers to fill gaps in their school systems. As a result, teachers from other areas of Botswana are brought in, but they may not be accustomed to the unique wildlife and rural living of the area.
Supported by Okavango Eternal, a local initiative is working to help these teachers adapt to their new surroundings and learn more about the natural world around them. By immersing themselves in the environment, these teachers are better equipped to inspire their students to become the custodians of the future.
National Geographic has partnered with DeBeers to showcase the importance of supporting education in the Okavango Delta region. Through their series and specials, they shed light on the incredible work being done to educate and empower both teachers and students in these remote communities.
