The Alberta government is considering ramping up efforts to prevent potential tariffs from the incoming U.S. president, Donald Trump, by boosting border patrol measures. Premier Danielle Smith has announced plans to reach out to Montana for assistance in cracking down on illegal items crossing the border. In addition, Smith is contemplating implementing sheriff border patrols and drones to enhance security along the border.
These actions were prompted by an emergency meeting held this week, in which Smith strategized with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers to address the threats posed by Trump’s presidency. However, there are concerns that the province may be encroaching on federal jurisdiction with these proposed measures.
Some critics argue that Alberta’s push for increased border security could potentially strain relations with the United States, while others believe that it is necessary to protect the province’s interests in the face of impending tariffs. The province’s stance on border security will likely continue to be a point of contention as discussions with U.S. officials progress.

Good idea!!!
Canada has Let to many multicultural into the this country. The security issue in the north will cause the USA to eventually do something really nasty to Canada.
I knew Alberta would be the first to kiss the cult leader Trump A– like they always do. They are letting him get away with his tactics, the gun problem , sex trade problem and drug problem not from Canada it the US and they know it. He Trump only trying to squeeze money from the Canadian people. He a convicted felon and should never be allowed in Canada thats the law.
Not sure why some comments are applauding this. This should be a general to do and not only done reactively i.e. threat of tariff in this situation
So with this increased border presence of CBSA officers, Mounties and Alberta Sheriff's, we are going to need to do the following:
1) Thorough searches of ALL vehicles, personal and commercial. Commercial vehicles will need all boxes, crates, and products searched.
2) ID checks.
3) All land that does not have road border crossings will need ground sensors and drone patrols. Sensors include advanced hyperspectral sensors.
Alberta is the smartest province in all Canada. That is all Trump asks to protect his country
So 3.38% some 298km out the 8,891 total. Like locks, boarders only stop honest people.
Patrol the Sakatchewan and BC borders for migrant creeps from Ontario and beyond.
Liberal clowns and their media clowns are planning a circus event over this issue……..just do what we have always done, protect our borders!
Does Alberta have a problem with illegals crossing the border? This is a FAKE problem…just a political stunt…If it was an issue…why is it only now that Danielle Smith is coming up with this "action"?
Oh yes, we will definitely need to increase the police presence on all provincial border crossings as well. Take a zero-trust approach to anyone crossing between provinces. Most especially truckers. Those semi drivers are some of the most corrupt people around and will gladly transport guns and drugs between provinces and countries.
I like Alberta as i think they are more proactive than other provinces in my view and i think they should be at the table for any discussions with the US. On the other hand, its sad that it took a threat from external sources to highlight an internal Canadian issue. How is it the world sees it and the Canadian government doesn't ? And how is it that external sources is the trigger for Canada to acknowledge and to resolve the issue ?
Trump is lighting a fire under Canadas AZZ. It will work and he will drop the tariff.
Or the United States could do its own work and monitor its own borders.
A move in the right direction … now you’re learning
What are they going to do, arrest all the Americans they see? US customs and border patrol says 98% of the fentanyl travels with a US citizen.
They shouldn't do it to avoid a tariff they should do it because it's their job
It’s easy to stop the flow of drugs, keep Americans in the US
Nenshi should keep his big, fat WEF mouth shut.
It’s absolutely sad that Justin Trudeau is forcing the provinces to cover the national border.

Quebec should Close their border too.
Classic. Why would Alberta taxpayers have to pay to patrol the US’s side of the border? Because… Trudeau!
We need to build a Punjabi town in Alberta. Ontario has Brampton, and BC has Surrey. If Alberta has something exclusively for Punjabis, border issues won't be as bad
Huh, who woulda thunk, a leader with a brain.
Rcmp are just as corrupt or worse than Trudeau. Good luck them doing anything other that arrested and persecuting law abiding Canadians
welp she's willing to do her part, but trudeaus not willing to do his.
a secure border is a benefit to both of us,we cannot afford any more immigrants,we got homeless people everywhere. at some point it is no longer compassionate, and actually disrespecting your own citizens for the benefits of outsiders
What???!!! Is Danielle Smith fool enough to take the Trump bait? She can't see the phony pretext behind Trump posturing on tariff threats? She's actually taking Trump's accusation of Canada "sending drugs & illegals" seriously? Toughen up & stop being so Canadian & always apologizing & being obsequious when you've done nothing wrong. BTW, Trump actually hates it when his opponents start groveling, so you can't win that way anyway.
about 25k people illegally were detained on the Canadian – US border. Mexican US border was over 1.5 million.
If you think Trump actually cares about the Canadian border security, you're dead wrong – the only way he can enact these Tarrif's is (same as last time) by declaring Canada a national security threat. The border excuse is exactly what he needs. We could literally stop all traffic from crossing the border and it would make no difference – its just an excuse he's using.
LMAO…..no one is crossing the border illegally from Montana into Alberta. Smith is buying into MAGA fear mongering as usual.
Hopefully she means as well anyone caught crossing the border illegally will be arrested and returned.
Okay good. And this effects a 25 percent tax on all exports to the US… How again? You just hoping Trump sees that you have more vehicles and agents on the border and goes. Guess i don't have to tax all those goods? He's still going to.
Hurry up Alberta, maybe the others will wake up before the boat sinks
Prime Minister Smith now, eh. She should mind her own business and keep her mouth shut. "with (very little) love from Edmonton.
Yes we must do more to close our border, so let’s build a wall and get the US to pay for it.
There will be wildings, then the white walkers coming from the south,, winter is coming
I am sorry trump. Is concerned about the drugs and criminal s that come across the border into Canada from USA me too
next thing you know will be building a wall lol
Just start to build a Border fence
Why would we do the US residents jobs?
See…? Trump knows how to use threats to get people do what he wants. Threats work. Russia, China and North Korea know it.
So when crossing the border from Canada into the USA, is it not US customs that decides who and what is allowed to enter into their country? Does Alberta’s Premier and her followers not have an understanding of this concept or it’s implementation? Considering the future President thought the employees at McDonalds filled the french fry bags using there hands, the border crossing concept could be epic discovery for him as well, perhaps Alberta’s Premier should enlighten him.
Danielle Smith is one smart Premier.
Build a fence
What a Trump suck up ! Don't make his job easier !
Secure borders reduces crime reduces contraband Conserves your resources
They are not 'Migrants', excuse us please. The correct term is 'illegal Aliens'.
Please use proper terms, else it could be offensive towards the real migrants who legally immigrated. And i am one of them
