In her TEDxUQ talk, Meagan Carney discusses the applications of machine learning in advancing medical diagnosis. Carney explains how machine learning algorithms can analyze medical data more efficiently and accurately than traditional methods, leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses. She highlights how these algorithms can process large amounts of complex data to identify patterns and predict potential health outcomes.
Carney also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between doctors and data scientists in implementing machine learning in healthcare settings. By working together, they can develop algorithms that are both clinically relevant and ethically responsible.
Throughout the talk, Carney provides examples of how machine learning has been successfully used in various medical fields, such as predicting patient outcomes and improving cancer detection rates. She concludes by urging the audience to embrace the potential of machine learning in revolutionizing the way we approach medical diagnosis and treatment.

Author Video Description
This talk will explore how we can use machine learning for informed decision-making and show why understanding these algorithms can remove the mystery and stigma around AI. Dr Meagan Carney is a Lecturer in Mathematics at The University of Queensland. She completed her PhD in Mathematics at the University of Houston, and her postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Germany. Dr Carney’s expertise lies in predicting extremes and rare events in complex systems, where she applies machine learning algorithms to assess the likelihood and impacts of events such as extreme weather occurrences and rare outcomes related to SARS-CoV-2. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
About TEDxTalks
TEDx is an international community that organizes TED-style events anywhere and everywhere — celebrating locally-driven ideas and elevating them to a global stage. TEDx events are produced independently of TED conferences, each event curates speakers on their own, but based on TED’s format and rules.
