Robotaxis vs. London’s Black Cab Drivers: A Shift in the Industry
In the heart of London, a profound transformation is brewing as robotaxis begin to make their presence felt on the city’s iconic streets. Known for their distinctive black cabs, London’s drivers must memorize vast networks of roads—over 25,000 to be exact—to earn their hard-won licenses. This rigorous training has long been the hallmark of professional cab drivers, ensuring they possess an intimate knowledge of the city. However, the advent of autonomous vehicle technology presents a new challenge that could redefine the cab industry.
As several companies race to launch robotaxi services, traditional cabbies find themselves facing an unprecedented threat. These automated vehicles promise convenience, efficiency, and a potentially lower cost for consumers. With the ability to navigate using sophisticated algorithms and real-time traffic data, robotaxis could gradually chip away at the livelihoods of drivers who have dedicated years to mastering London’s intricate roadmap.
This episode of “60 Minutes” delves deep into the implications of this technological shift, exploring the potential economic impacts on London’s cab drivers and the future of urban transportation. Who will prevail in this battle of tradition versus innovation? Join us to uncover the story behind the rise of robotaxis and the dedicated cab drivers standing against the wave of automation.

Poor taxi driver he doesn’t know that cars ALREADY don’t need a driver
Lidar? We don't need no stinking lidar!
It is a cultural thing, AV companies should withdraw from London.
Steam machine replaced hard labour. The world lives on.
How hard you must hate a brand, avoiding it all together while it is much bigger, cheaper and better? MSM loosing it, every day a little more.
The only reason for self-driving robotaxis is so a few oligarchs can suck up one of the few remaining subsistence job opportunities in America’s gig economy. Put a human being to work. Don’t ride in robotaxis.
Horse drawn carriage drivers had the same qualms at the beginning of the 20th century. Creation through destruction – modern capitalism. Been around for hundreds of years. Nothing new. Deal with it and move on.
This women is a clown. Did she compare the miles a human driver takes to the entire fleet of wymo’s to compare drive time to safety?
a handful of companies are literally going to own everything.
Humans want convenience above all else these days. They don't care if it kills off jobs, as long as it's not killing off their job. (Just wait, it will!) And btw, I've taken Waymo several times, and it frequently seems to not want to pick me up at the address I choose or drop me off at the address I choose. Waymo doesn't talk about why this is. The navigation system does not work all the time. Lyft, Uber, and Waymo take routes that are convoluted because the algorithms don't work well. A cab driver always used to know the best route to take because all they did was drive the city and learn the streets. Props to anyone who thinks that learning something is important.
Anyone that thinks black cabs should feel threatened by autonomous vehicles are off their rocker. British people love class, they love history, I guarantee you premium clients will still go with the black cab for the aesthetic, luxury and history, not pick the autonomous vehicle with no communication, plastic american feel and no history
I think these tests are a complete waste of time. It's nice that they know the shortest ways there, but now what if there's traffic or some situation where the roads are shut down? There's just simply no reason for this when GPS exists.
Lived in London for 20 years, never taken a black cab. Always Uber.
Poor horses lost their job technology (car engine)
Because what the world needs is more power and more control to the tech giants.
Cabbies are clueless😂
Their test is stupid.
Funny thing: If you remove human drivers entirely, suddenly, AI does not need to be this smart, as idiots are no longer on the road.
As too many people either yawn at or cheer on the lost jobs that advances in technology will increasingly bring, there are not nearly enough in power to come up with a plan for the humans and their families who will be losing their income. Simply shrugging them off as "low skilled"- clearly this story shows how untrue that is- is not a plan.
Like a party political broadcast on behalf of WAYMO with just a hint of WAVE.
NOT A SINGLE WORD ABOUT TESLA THAT WILL CRUSH THEM INTO DUST
the black cabs are a part and parcel of london
uber and lyft have already cut into their biz
but they will not die
and waymo sux
😊
As long as they replace the wrong type of ‘unwanted’ private taxi drivers, NOT the traditional safe ‘black taxi’
Humanity is digging its own grave with AI
So what?
People should not be given any choice. Instead whatever is most expensive and employs the most people should be the only options customers in London get. In fact, they should shut down all of London's Tube subways, because a single subway driver can drive thousands of passengers. This too affects the employment of taxi drivers.
lol… black cabs are done and dusted because TFL sets the mile price… who cares about them? they overcharged, they represent the most corrupted industry in UK….
As of today, cabbies are more threatened by uber than anything else
CBS 60 minutes now is a pro Trump propaganda thing. Avoid at all cost.
What a colossal waste of time. The car replaced the horse, Netlix axed Blockbuster, ect. Move on chaps!
For many decades, 60 Minutes stood as one of the most professional and esteemed news programs globally. However, the advent of Donald Trump, characterized by his notorious criminal intent and unwavering pursuit of truth suppression, led to a significant transformation of the program. Individuals such as Nick Bilton and Bari Weiss were appointed to transform 60 Minutes into a mere mouthpiece for Trump’s agenda. Consequently, the program’s value diminished, and will lead to its potential collapse. When Trump’s influence wanes and his supporters are disbanded, it will be possible for those who still uphold the principles of truth and courage to resurrect and restore 60 Minutes to its former glory.
Bye, bye….
I have seen these AI taxis many times driving around London it is only a matter of time before they are granted a licence to operate.
They will probably automate a black London taxi also in the near future.
Black taxi drivers are delusional if they think they can survive driverless taxis!
Why? Oh yes – let's chuck people out of jobs in favour of technology. Technology should be making jobs easier not replacing the person doing the job!
Typical Brits. These clowns take themselves way too seriously. You're just driving a car. You're not curing cancer. Don't be so stubborn or too proud to not use a map.
The leftist propaganda machine completely ignores the most advanced self driving vehicle, Tesla. Still seething with Musk Derangement Syndrome. Wymo cars are too expensive and stupid to ever make a dent.
I had to get somewhere in less than 11 minutes, problem was both Google and Apple Maps said the ride would take 21—the black cab got me there in 9. On the flip side, I have also been yelled and threatened by black cab drivers for no good reasons as all.
Er is zo veel landbouwgrond die veel makelijker en goedkoper gebruikt kan worden, wat een dwaas plan.
what did you think when the people who drove horse carriage saw engine cars it just evolves now its a autonomous vehicle whether you like it or not you can't stop it and if you do you are only delaying it
Just asked the horses: "The automobile is no threat to us. Horses are integral to the history of London, just like the Queen. There is no London without Us and Her! People need high quality, human service. Nobody needs soulless cheap rides! Isn't that right Sir Archibald? – Yes, yes, well said Sir Thunderbolt!"
Robo taxis puts money into the rich hands and not the ordinary man
When I used to live in London, I would avoid black cabs where ever possible. They are rude. Also, the dodgy cabs are way cheaper and actually not dodgy.
This is an ancient system as designed before maps and GPS to make sure the " horse Riders" know where to take people efficiently.
There is no need for that now. They just made this system to make sure not anyone can drive a black cab, simple as that. Stupid in my opinion, Google maps advance technology can calculate better routes than any black cab. All you see in london is black cabs stuck in traffic. Its 2026 not 1706 any more.
Humans can certainly be replaced by robots and AI, but this is human society unless we want to call it other ways.
No! I’d rather have a real life human, genuine London taxi driver!!
Said the same with GPS and uber.
A Tesla Robotaxi cost per mile is a small number of pennies. It will sweep away taxis, buses and most private motor cars.
The public transport jobs of the future will be controlling and maintaining the Robotaxi8 fleets. Adapt or die.
I don't understand this hell bent drive to eliminate certain jobs that provide a way for people to make a living. What is the purpose? A solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Same goes for creepy humanoid robots. Why does anyone imagine that we even want them?
No question London cabbies are the best. Aside from flawlessly knowing the fastest point A to B, they can turn on a dime to make corrections if there is a traffic impediment. And, wow are they safe…..
Every true Londoner has atleast one good story about how a black cab driver helped them.
